What's the Deal With: Splenda With Fiber

What's the Deal With: Splenda With Fiber

If you're a fan of sprinkling a packet of artificial sweetener in your coffee instead of sugar, you may be excited to hear that Splenda has a new product out that contains fiber. Each packet of Splenda (which has the sweetening power of two packets of sugar) offers one gram of fiber. Now I'm all for getting extra fiber whenever I can, since the recommended amount is between 25 and 30 grams a day, but I just don't feel right about this. That's because for one, I am no fan of artificial sweeteners, and two, I'd rather get my daily fiber by eating fiber-rich foods such as fruits, veggies, nuts, and whole grains, since these also contain valuable vitamins and nutrients.

I do applaud Splenda for trying to make a healthier version of their sweetener, because the packets with fiber are definitely a better option than plain old Splenda. So if artificial sweeteners are your thing, you might as well have your coffee and your fiber too.

No one should be excited about this, especially if you take Splenda for weight loss. They are a lot of articles (from Medical Journals) that claim the chemicals in Splenda (and all artificial sweetners) mess with your body's responses and you can actually end up putting on a lot of weight after a while that will take longer to shed the second time around because you body is out of whack. I think it's because it messes with the leptin response (which is whats suppose to tell your body you are satisfied after eating). Scary stuff.

I use Stevia, but when I first saw these commercials a few months back I was shocked. I know some folks who get a laxative effect from coffee already. This would surely have them running to the bathroom.

A recent study came out that links Splenda with depression. I suffer from depression and also use a few packs of Splenda a day so I switched over to Truvia. I like Truvia a lot....do I perfer Splenda, sure, but Truvia is better for my health.

i think this is the stupidest product. i mean, would you like some metamucil with your chemicals? try getting fiber from NATURAL sources, it works quite nicely. btw- coffee has fiber in it, about 2 grams per cup. no splenda needed!

I think it is a very nice initiative, I am doing a low carb diet and have lost 26.5 lbs and although I eat veggies and take flaxseed on my salad it is nice to know that the cup of coffee I take every morning has an additional gram of fiber.

seems freaky, but it's peaked my intrest. i think i'll give it a try, only because i drink SO much coffee and get no fiber. hmm...

It seems like an odd combination to me, but I suppose that there are people out there that don't get enough fiber in their diets and could use extra fiber where they can get it. I usually do use a couple of packs of Splenda or Nutrasweet in my coffee a day, but I also eat around 30 grams of fiber a day from fruits and veggies, so I will probably not buy these. I'd really actually like to start buying Truvia, but they don't sell it in our grocery stores yet.

I have tried these and I like them. My only issue is that one packet makes things too sweet for me, so I tend to split the packets. I actually prefer Splenda to the other artificial sweeteners.

I never use this but kudos to them for trying...

I'm not a fan of artificial sweeteners either... For those looking for a healthier alternative, I wanted to recommend Stevia. It's a truly all natural sweetener - that is, it comes from a plant. It tastes great and can come in packets just like sugar or Splenda. It's been around for AGES and you can get it at health foods stores. For me, it's a welcome alternative to ANY chemical sweetener. (From my research, I've learned that Splenda may not exactly be the "natural sugar derived" sweetener it claims to be...) Anyway, here's an interesting link. The only time I ever use it is with unsweetened iced tea so I was glad to hear about this. I never sweeten my coffee or hot tea but knowing I'll get a gram or two of extra fiber every once in awhile is pretty neat.

I agree Fit, I was dumbfounded when I first saw these commercials for splenda with fiber. I don't mind artificial sweetener but I absolutely cannot stand Splenda. I can taste it in anything its put in and it makes me sick.

I discovered this over the weekend. I'm a moderate coffee drinker who is doing Weight Watchers (19 pounds since September, whoot!). Since I'm conscious of every calorie I take in and also my fiber intake, I thought this was a pretty cool product - I only use a couple packets a day, but if it helps boost my fiber intake and also doesn't cost me calories, I'm good.
