Oh, and missed the question about getting a tan...I thought a little bit of sunbath helped to avoid acne.

I'd drink soy milk if it wasn't so expensive here (it costs almost twice as much as the regular nonfat milk I buy).

I had no idea about the milk! The trick is to never touch your face. If you have to wipe something off or scratch, wash your hands first.

Dairy is the worst for me....it really breaks me out, I only do soy now! I can't really tell the difference about the refined carbs, but I do think diet is related to acne. I have been battling acne for so incredibly long, I really hate it.

P.S. I used to live in Switzerland and ate chocolate nearly everyday. For me it's not remotely related to acne. If it causes you to break out, it's maybe something personal (an allergy that may only have acne as it's visible symptom) or related to the conditions under which you normally eat it (i.e. stress).

I've had acne for a long time. I went to a dermatologist for about a year, until it became obvious he was more concerned about making sure my skin was perfectly clear than about my overall health (recommended Accutane to someone with liver issues and a birth control pill not recommended for people - like me - with a strong family history of breast cancer). The one thing I'd recommend to people is to make sure you're getting enough vitamins and minerals. All sorts of nutritional deficiencies can cause acne and other skin problems. The most effective thing for me has been making sure to up my intake of fruits and vegetables and to cut down on "empty calorie" foods and refined carbs like cake and white bread. The other thing I would suggest to people is to look for an underlying condition that might be causing your acne, and also to look at the traditional diet of your ethnic group. For example, Native Americans seem to have more acne on a "modern" North American diet, and I suspect it's because of the refined carbs. Everyone in my extended family who has acne has some other underlying condition that's associated with it. Don't go to a dermatologist and start taking antibiotics or other harsh drugs that can mess up your system for years when it might be your lifestyle or some other condition that's the problem. The only thing that shocks me is that everybody doesn't have terrible skin with all the garbage in our food and how diets tend to be lower on whole foods than ever.

I don't buy the dairy product answer -- few if any of the hormones in question aren't broken down in the GI tract before they can have an effect. And EVERYTHING we eat has iodine, hello, iodized salt. There's just no evidence that dairy causes acne.

Darn, I thought I knew a lot about it, but I scored low.

I said yes to the tan thing because it does initially clear you up but your skin makes up for the deleted oil production shortly after that. I figured this was a tricky way to ask the question because of the temporal issue.
