There should be a category for skate skiing, much different than cross country. And just a little bit crazy, with the skiing uphill.

We have no snow. It barely freezes. Winter sports are the same as summer sports here. My vote is for soccer with my boy.

Skiing all the way! My husband used to be a ski instructor but sadly...it hasn't snowed once here in the Poconos! It's also been so warm here that man-made snow can't be made!

Carsandparties - That is great. I started skiing as an adult and want to encourage you to take a lesson (group lessons are way cheaper than privates). They are so helpful and the instructors are always more helpful than friends, boyfriends, or husbands. Have fun!!! I think you are going to love it!!!

I'm going to try downhill skiing for the very first time this winter! I'm totally terrified, though.

I really want to try snow shoeing! But living in San Francisco you have to drive a while to get to the snowy places. And this winter has been eerily warm - everywhere. It was 70 degrees in New York City recently!! That is so not normal.

Speaking of figure skating... has there been any competitions on TV as of late? I'm not sure when the season starts/ends?

Does working out at the Y count? I actually live in frigid (typically) MN, and if it does manage to snow, it can be unbearably cold! So, whatever I do outside, it doesn't last long. So, I guess I will go with ice skating since I signed my boys up for lessons.

Snow shoeing is wonderful--and it takes very little skill. Honestly, if you can walk, you can snow shoe. Now, if only we'd get some snow in western PA!

This was the first year I was adamant about getting out and doing winter activities (my mom was going to make a rink on her lake to skate) but in MN our winter has been pretty much RAIN. :( Can't do nice-weather stuff, can't do cold-weather stuff.
