Which Part of Your Body Is Least Flexible?

Since I teach yoga, people are always asking me which poses they can do to stretch the least-flexible parts of their bodies. Swimmers complain of tight shoulders, runners continuously have tight hamstrings, and people who sit all day experience have tight hips. Stretching your muscles every day, throughout the day, can definitely increase your range of flexibility. So which part of your body could use the extra attention?

To be totally honest, it's my hamstrings... but legs in general.. I used to dance (belly and indian) and I fell off a cliff in April 2008 which had me out of commission for almost 7 months.. I didn't break anything, but just had severe joint and muscle damage as I dislocated my hip, shoulder, knees and elbow... and sprained my ankle. To make the damage worse, I didn't realise what happened to my joints, so I made the hike back out of the mountain, and only the following morning the complications hit me. T'was fun though. Falling 24ft and not dying or breaking anything, is pretty damn cool!

Hamstrings are the worst with my hips at a close second!

My shoulders. I'm a runner, and I've always been really flexible in my legs and hips. But no matter how much yoga I do, I can't get my shoulders to loosen up!

My hamstrings are tight, as well as my hips. I am a student athlete (runner) so I guess I have the hip tightens from sitting all day and the hamstring tightness from running!

I'm actually pretty flexible because I dance. However, I would love to increase my overall range. It would make for more dramatic moves and poses.

My back. Even when I did gymnastic as a little girl I could never touch my toes or do a good back bend. I've worked and worked on it, had a massage therapist work on it and a physical therapists try to help me loosen it up. Those muscles will not length and the thought is because they may already be stretched as far as they'll go due to having an extra vertebrae.

Spiderlove -I'm the exact opposite! I also did gymnastics as a kid (a looooooong time ago) and I can't do the splits but my backbends are great, and I can still put my feet on my head.

Shoulders and neck. I want to scream just stretching in the mornings, much less working out. That's probably a stress thing though. :(

Definitely my hamstrings! I need to do more yoga to loosen those muscles up, I guess.

My back. I did gymnastics as a kid, and while I can still do splits and anything that requires me going forward or sideways (like cartwheels, walkovers, etc), I can't do *anything* that requires me going backwards... it's weird!

I think my back because I am not one of those people who can sit with the legs spread open on the floor and then bend forward...it just doesn't happen!

I'm not really sure. After losing more weight I'm more flexible in general.

Definitely my back, probably due to the surgery where the doctors removed a disc and added some bone from my hip into my lower back.

I'm actually hypermobile so I don't have much problem being bendy. I will say that as I get older though my hamstrings are usually the first thing to tighten up.

I almost put my hamstrings, but I think I'm equally tight in all muscle groups! (I'm moderately flexible actually) Weightlifting and not enough stretching time keeps me somewhat tight.
