Why Slouching Is So Bad For You

How Bad Posture Affects You

Sitting at your desk? Here's a friendly reminder to sit up straight. Bad posture affects you all the time, from when you sit in your car to how you walk.

At a recent session with my personal trainer, I was reminded of just that fact. We were going through a set of balance exercises and I kept having to stop to straighten my back to keep myself from hunching over while I jumped on and off the weight bench.

Having to constantly correct your form during a workout isn't the only way bad posture affects you. Read on for why bad posture is really so bad.

  • It makes you look bigger. Having a few tricks up your sleeve for bikini season is never a bad thing. Add standing up straight to your list — it can make you look 10 pounds thinner in a flash. Check out these tips on how to stand up straight to help banish those belly rolls.
  • It can undo your workout. Who wants all those hours of planks to go to waste? Bad posture can do just that. When you slouch, your ab muscles — the ones you've worked so hard on to define and sculpt — once again turn off. By practicing better posture you'll be ensuring that you keep your core engaged, even when you're not at the gym.
  • It can be the source of back pain. Slouching at your desk or while standing puts extra strain on your back and can also lead to other aches and pains as well. Unlearning all your bad postural habits can be the key to relieving chronic pain.

Did reading this make you sit up straight in your chair? Start a new posture routine by doing exercises that strengthen your core (hello, Pilates!) as well as the muscles around your spine, like these yoga twists.

Whenever I read articles about posture I always find myself sitting up a little straighter. Until my mind skips on to something else... Definitely need to work on it!
