You Asked: Ankle Weights For Workouts

Dear FitSugar,
I walk at a moderate pace for 30-45 minutes during my lunch hour. I just purchased some 2 lb. leg weights and started using them. Is this beneficial and if so, what for?

- Walking with Weights

I think it is great that you are walking at lunch, since that is a great way to fit exercise in during the day. However, I don't really recommend wearing ankle weights. While wearing weights can increase the amount of calories you burn, they can also seriously increase your chances of injuring your ankles, knees, hips and lower back. It is safer for your joints to walk a little further or a little more intensely to increase the amount of calories burned. While this might be harder to fit in on your lunch hour, try adding taking the stairs every chance you get and squeezing in a longer walk at another time during the day once or twice a week.

Have a good time walking!

There are some great weight vests available that can really help you up the intensity of your workout. The vest is worn close to the body and can be adjusted so it doesn't hang on your shoulders and cause pain. I've found that to be a great tool in my exercise program.
