You Don't Have to Give Up M&M's in '08!

It's the New Year again, and you know what that means: time for New Year's resolutions. Here at FitSugar, we are going to be helping you out with all kinds of advice for sticking to those healthy promises, which is why I am so excited to tell you about M&M's® 100 Calorie Packs. Thanks to our friends at M&M's®, you can have real enjoyment with less guilt. M&M's® 100 Calorie Packs allow you to indulge in the candy-covered chocolate treats you love without breaking your resolutions. Available in the candy aisle, these products are identical in ingredients to their full sized counterparts. The trick is that they come in perfect portions that are just 100 calories per serving. So you really don't need to give up chocolate in order to stick to those resolutions. Pretty awesome, right?

Thank you to M&Ms® 100 Calorie Packs for sponsoring this post.

I counted the M&Ms in the 100 calorie packs and they consistently come to the number 27. So, I just buy a large bag then put 27 of them in the snack ziplock bags. I can usually get around 16 servings out of a large bag, and it cost me less than the box of 100 calorie ones.

Suzanne, FYI... M&M's do come in dark chocolate! At least they do in my area. They come in a purple package. However, I've yet to see them in the 100 Cal snack packs. But if you're willing to divide them yourself it's a great treat! I'm eating a few as we speak!

Kiddy-me too!! I can't explain why it annoys me so much. This is not healthy food, I get that it helps with portion control, but honestly, when I'm watching what I eat, I'm not eating M&M's, and when I eat M&M's I eat a handful and don't fret about it. Suzanne--I have yet to see any of these packs be of something healthy...it just makes so much more sense to eat your dark chocolate and be happy! I understand some people have portion control problems, but this stuff is such a rip-off! Just buy a huge bag of M&M's and split it into baggies, it's the same thing, but so much cheaper.

You guys are so critical! Maybe some people have portion control problems yet still want to eat something sweet... GOD FORBID!! Anyway, this is a great answer. Yeah you could eat a piece of chicken breast, but as fun and exciting as this sounds I would rather have a small handful of m&ms, thankyouverymuch...........

I don't mean to be so hard on Fit, maybe it's just that we trust your opinion and consider it to be pretty honest despite advertising pressures?

Halfbakedjake: I totally thought the same thing; I was surprised/disappointed that this was so blatantly a paid advertisement by M&Ms under the guise of a FitSugar post. I don't know, it seemed out of character for Fit, who usually would point you towards a nutritional/good for you selection, even if it is something like chocolate (like going for dark chocolate for the antioxidants). Like her post here: http://fitsugar.com/689384. Another thing that she usually mentions (after a post about junk food) is the importance of limiting yourself to just one of these portion-controlled indulgence snacks or it'll defeat the purpose--perhaps it was not added because of the sponsorship?

if twinkies gave fitsugar enough money, would there be a post singing their praises too?

I sent my boyfriend for a box of these when they first came out, and he remarked at how much more expensive they were than an entire bag of fun-size M&M's. I think two or three fun-size packs were the equivalent to one 100-calorie pack. I've gotten a few boxes, though, and they're just not my thing. I'd rather have an occasional normal-sized bag of M&M's for 250 calories than an itty bitty bag whenever. Of course I'd rather never have M&M's. They're a gateway junk food!

I'm not thrilled with the fact that this was sponsored by a candy company, but you gotta get your revenue somehow. I'm also not crazy with the "100 calorie" craze. I think it encourages people to NOT think about what they eat and learn healthy habits, and think it's okay to eat junk food in small amounts on a regular basis. That said, I love MnMs too, but don't eat them often. If I'm going to use my calories on chocolate, I generally stick to my Green and Black's 70% dark. My son used his own money to buy himself a bag of MnMs today at the store, and if they'd had a 100 calorie pack available for sale at the checkout, I would have preferred he buy that.

I could never give up M&M's they are my PMS must have and i would end up eating the whole box of 100 cal packs so it would kind of defeat the purpose.

Everything in moderation. I love my M&Ms! Thanks, Fit!

I don't think the point is to trick you into thinking they are healthy, I think it's for those of us who every once in a while, would like a little bit of a sweet snack - sometimes I just want a little something bad. I feel like since run 4 days a week and eat well, I can indulge every now and again and these 100 cal packs are perfect.

If you have to have a treat portion control is key, however these 100 calorie m&m snacks are a complete rip-off. There are only 7 packs per box. The fun-size m&ms (like the ones given out for Halloween) are 90 calories and come in bags of 18-20. Around here the fun size sacks are less expensive than a 100 calorie box. You will be fatter and poorer if you choose the 100 calorie treats over the fun size treats. I am not particularly happy about this post which is essentially a commercial for nutritionally empty food on a health and fitness blog.

To tell you the truth - these 100 calorie packs do help me. I'm not so good on portion control, so If this is all I have available to me during the day, then it does satisfy me. I'm not a fan of eating pure candy as a snack, but some of the others are good to have. I do eat about 1 oz. of dark chocolate daily. Carrying the right amount of the already proportioned choc. sticks works for me since I'm not disciplined enough to measure it out for myself. Once I start chopping away at a big hunka' chocolate... I'm tasting, then eating... and I totally forget about portion control. Now if M&M's came in dark, antioxident rich chocolate, I might have a use the their 100 cal packs.
