Are You at Risk For an Ulcer?

I've known a few people who have had stomach ulcers, one of my friends even had one right before her wedding! How awful is that?

I don't know too much about what causes them and how they are treated. Do you?

Let's test your knowledge.

I am amazed that things they used to not really know much about (when I was a kid my mom had an ulcer caused by "stress"), they not only know for sure what causes it, but how to treat it. To think that her years of agony could now be remedied by taking an antibiotic just floors me. I can't wait to find out what it will be like in another 20 years.

Ha! I ruled that quiz. I remember finding out stress didn't cause ulcers and used that as an excuse to stay stressed out. Because grad school does that to a person.

Good Quiz - I've had ulcers in the past so I knew the answers. I'm surprised how everyone thinks that they are caused my stress. I'm really interested to see if there is any connection between having colic as a child and getting a ulcer, but no one seems to have studied that one.

Great post Fit! I had esophageal ulcers from an adverse reaction to a common antibiotic that went undiagnosed (another, though uncommon, cause of ulcers--as some kill the good bacteria that keep H. Pylori at bay.) As I was a young, healthy girl recovering from a sinus infection, they originally misdiagnosed my symptoms and instead gave me large doses of Anaprox for the excruciating pain--making matters worse. Yup, I almost died at age 24 from ulcers. After changing doctors I finally got diagnosed two weeks later. My mild mannered GI doc during my scoping procedure exclaimed, "Sh*t, she has the stomach of a 55 y/o stock broker! We got to her just in time!" FYI--If it feels like a shooting pain around your heart every time you swallow, you might want to get checked out.

2/5. I always thought it was caused by stress.
