Age Determines Preference to Drink Wine Alone or With Food

Do You Prefer to Drink Wine Alone or With Food?

Does wine need anything more than a glass? The answer, it appears, might depend on your age. In his latest piece, New York Times wine columnist Eric Asimov addresses the surprising statistic that younger wine consumers are more likely to consume wine alone and without food than their older counterparts. "My first impulse was dismay," he writes. "It's not that I feel doctrinaire about drinking wine with food. I just think it's better that way. For that matter, I prefer food with wine." Are you happy with a glass of vino on its own, or are you inclined to have provisions alongside it? As you grow older, do you find your preferences changing?

I do both. Sometimes a glass of wine just sounds really good like white wine or sparkling wine.

I agree with senorita, I only drink red wine with meals but sometimes will drink a glass of rosé or white before dinner. I don't know, I just have a hard time imagining myself sipping a glass of tannic red wine without food to go with it.

I barely drink wine as it is and sadly I have several bottles. I am just clueless on how to select a bottle of wine. I regret not taking that elective class in college.

I've yet to find one that doesn't taste awful.

I definitely drink wine without food but do think that certain wines just are better with food! For me a heavier red wine is sort of tough to drink without some food paired with it but for example white wine or sparkling wine, are easier to drink alone!

With the exception of an icey sangria on a warm day, I'm really not a fan of wine with or without food. About the only time I cocktail while eating is when I'm tossing back a beer while grooving on a burger. Most other times I opt for plain old ice water.

Allergic! The sulfites make me itchy and hivey.

I am one of the rare people it seems that doesn't like the taste of wine. Might be the Boons, or my friend's mom's MadDog we over drank when we were teens, but it all seems to dry to me. I like my drinks strong but really sweet.

I do both. Sometimes a glass of wine just sounds really good. For example, right now, I wouldn't mind a glass of sparkling Rose.

I do both. Before the meal with snacks, during the meal, after the meal by itself. :) The only time I really don't want food is when I'm at a winery wine tasting. Maybe a cracker or two to clear my palate, but a big red flag for me is when wineries try to get you to pair chocolate with wine. Sub-par wines might taste better when they're masked by other flavors. If I'm buying your wine, I wanna taste the wine, not whatever food you're giving me to taste with it.
