10 Inspired Desserts to Know in New York

Oct 20 2013 - 9:29am

While at the New York City Wine & Food Festival [1], both new and seasoned pastry chefs, ice cream makers, and confectioners showcased their sweet treats. We found 10 inspired desserts — from rosemary chocolate s'mores to Cronut holes from Dominique Ansel Bakery — worthy of knowing in New York City.

Dominique Ansel Cronut Hole

Dominique Ansel [2] brought Cronut holes to the festival. The mini croissant-doughnuts, in this month's caramelized-apple crème fraîche flavor, attracted the largest line we've ever seen in festival history. And the one-bite Cronut was worth it.

Schmackary's Chocolate Diablo Cookie

Schmackary's [3] served a green tea cookie that was good and gluten-free, but the real star to know is the Chocolate Diablo, a dark chocolate cookie topped with cayenne pepper, crushed red pepper, cinnamon, and paprika. The cookie itself has perfect chewiness and subtle spices that numb the palate without being overwhelmingly spicy.

Three Tarts Gourmet Marshmallow S'more

The Three Tarts [4] gourmet marshmallow s'more with chocolate rosemary marshmallow and chocolate chip graham cookies made us realize that savory herbs and chocolate can and do work well together.

Ample Hills Creamery Ooey-Gooey Butter Cake

Butter cake sounds plain Jane and boring, but Ample Hills Creamery [5] knows what it's doing. Chunks of St. Louis-style butter cake, moist and decadent in nature, are lodged in the vanilla cream cheese ice cream base. This ice cream should be the new standard.

Hella Bitter Candied Bitter Bacon

Bitters in a candied bacon recipe? Try it! Hella Bitter [6] developed a recipe to prove that brown sugar, bacon, and bitters complement each other.

My Sweet Brigadeiro Brigadeiro

My Sweet Brigadeiro [7]'s traditional Brazilian brigadeiro is a confection made with dark chocolate and condensed milk that is rolled into various crunchy toppings. The consistency is similar to a nut butter or a ganache, and it's way too easy to go overboard on these chewy treats.

Levain Bakery Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Chip

OK, maybe Levain Bakery [8]'s dark chocolate peanut butter chip doesn't sound revolutionary, but these ultrarich cookies with gooey centers deserve some attention, especially if you're not familiar with them. Peanut butter cups, prepare to meet your competition.

Four & Twenty Blackbirds Salty Honey Pie

Four & Twenty Blackbirds' [9] salty honey pie tastes just like it sounds. The crust is buttery and flaky, the custardy center bursts with honey flavor, and the flake salt garnish amps up the floral notes.

Shake Shack Coffee and Doughnuts Frozen Custard

Shake Shack [10] recently teamed up with Dominique Ansel to do a Cronut Hole Concrete [11], so we can't help but think the coffee and doughnuts frozen custard is a spinoff. The doughnut pieces work wonderfully folded into the thick coffee custard.

Sweet Loren's Chewy Oatmeal Cranberry Cookies

Sweet Loren's Ready to Bake Desserts [12] make break-and-bake cookies taste fresh again. The whole grain, dairy-free cookies have the coveted, chewy cookie texture and are not too sweet. The oatmeal cranberry flavor is deliciously grainy and Fall-appropriate.
