The Best Grilled Cheese Sandwich You Ever Ate

Let's Dish: What's the Best Grilled Cheese You Ever Ate?

In case you haven't noticed, we've gone grilled cheese crazy! We're celebrating National Grilled Cheese month by sharing our favorite recipes, and now I want to hear all about the best grilled cheese sandwich you've ever ate. Channel your inner Giada de Laurentiis from the Food Network series, The Best Thing I Ever Ate, and tell me what made the sandwich memorable.

I'll start: the best grilled cheese sandwich I ever ate was my attempt at re-creating Hog Island's amazing sandwich. The real recipe for the sandwich is in Laura Werlin's book, so I'm hoping to experiment with it soon. How about you? Finish this sentence in the comments below: the best grilled cheese sandwich I ever ate was . . .

Can't say since I find grill cheese sandwiches more as a snack than an actual meal.

Well if live in LA you must visit The Grilled Cheese Truck (www.thegrilledcheesetruck.com). Ignore the fact its a food truck and enjoy its delicious offerings. They have a variety but my favorite is the Cheesy Mac grilled cheese. Mac and Cheese in a sandwich equals heaven!

Boudins in San Francisco. Pair it with their tomato soup, and it is AWESOME! The perfect meal for a rainy day.The Cafe at Muir Woods also has a great grilled cheese, but their tomato soup to go with it is not as good as Boudin.

So many yummy "adult" versions come to mind. But my love for the simple "kid" version--buttered squishy white bread with the rubbery Kraft cheddar slices dunked in a steamy bowl of Campbell's tomato soup made with whole milk--will always make me happy!

there was a reader recipe on fitsugar a while ago for a grilled cheese with mushrooms, carmelized red onions and balsamic reduction. I made it and it was ah-mazing. Also, on the low-budj side, a grilled cheese with wheat wonderbread, kraft singles, and a little garlic powder, oregano, and red pepper flakes is awesome!

So true about Friendly's! It's just about the only thing I'll eat there (that and a peanut butter cup sundae of course!)

....made by my dad- Cracker Barrel New York Aged Cheddar on homemade sourdough toast. Thick slices of everything, brushed with butter and olive oil, and grilled on the BBQ. Dip it in ketchup, side it with my salad (mixed greens, feta, toasted pine nuts and homemade bacon vinagrette.) And I have to give a shout out to Friendly's ;-) They make a DAMN good grillycheez (or at least they did when I was little)

The best grilled cheese I've ever eaten was at First Watch in Cincinnati. Swiss, Havarti, Monterey Jack and Cheddar cheeses pn sourdough bread that is crusted with Parmesan! Soooo amazing. I feel like a sandwich that contains more than just cheese and bread (and maybe butter or a condiment) ceases to be "grilled cheese."

....the melted morrison at side door in portland oregon. they use the best cheeses, an herb soft cream cheese with monterey, mozz and a few others, and they toast it on amazing bread and give salt and pepper kettle chips on the side. i dream of this sandwich.

... this Roasted Beet and Goat Cheese sandwich I made awhile back. I also live about 2 minutes from Melt, so I've had some winners there as well. I just can't get enough of beets, though. http://kelseyincleveland.wordpress.com/2011/03/07/roasted-beet-and-goat-cheese-sandwich/

A restaurant nearby makes an amazing grilled cheese with Tallegio & Vermont cheddar, a fig & sweet onion compote and escarole on a housemade honey oatmeal bread. It's a $12 grilled cheese - but it is so worth it!

Without a doubt, Brian Boitano's grilled cheese sandwich with red onion jam! The onion jam takes about an hour to make by adding brown sugar, water, and red wine vinegar to sliced red onions. It's made with two types of cheeses and put on rustic Italian bread. mmmhmmm! I love to dip it in Central Market's creamy balsamic dressing :) http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/brian-boitano/grilled-cheese-sandwich-with-red-onion-jam-recipe/index.html
