Bloody Mary Recipe

A Bloody Mary Experience

I've never really given Bloody Marys a fair shot.

There are a lot of die-hard fans who'll be completely appalled by that statement, but it's true. I've just always been slightly confused as to why anyone would ever want to mix tomato juice with vodka and add hot sauce. Why on earth people would want to drink that in the morning is beyond me. But in the interest of expanding my horizons, I bought all the ingredients and mixed one up.

What did I think of my first Bloody Mary?

Honestly, I wasn't blown away. I enjoyed the flavors enough — I am a huge fan of tomatoes. But I think it could have used way more heat. So in the future, I'll probably add more hot sauce. While I'm still more likely to make a pitcher of grapefruit mimosas, I'd really like to find out if Bloody Marys are the hangover cures that they promise to be.

@gcwebber Sacramento brand tomato juice is also very fresh tasting.  Campbell's and V-8 are just too "heavy" for me

@Anna Monette Roberts What Anna said about the Pepper Vodka!   I also have a friend that makes a KILLER Mary.  She swears by adding a bit of celery salt.

Try the Hoosier Mamma Bloody Mary Mix. It is amazing! It is vegan and gluten free! They also have a spicy mix as well.

@gcwebber I have always hated bloody marys for that exact reason I felt like I was drinking spaghetti o juice, so I will be trying it knudsen's tomato juice!

I recommending using Pepper Vodka . . . it definitely kicks up the heat! Also, try serving it with some pickled veggies (green beans and okra) and pimento-stuffed olives. When done the right way, a Bloody Mary is spicy and savory. These beverages definitely take the edge off if you are trying to recover from the night before or are just looking for a saltier cocktail to enjoy!

@mhardendc I agree, horseradish is where it's at! I'll be trying the Knudsen's juice - @gcwebber hit the nail on the head with regular tomato juice tasting "cooked." I like bloody mary's but I want to LOVE them!

@gcwebber I know it's more of a fuss, but for your next experiment, you should try a gazpacho bloody mary! It's the freshest bloody mary experience I've ever encountered:

Lordy, that sounds good!  I love gazpacho, but never considered this before!  I'll definitely be trying this during the summer!  Thanks!

The idea of a "savory" drink was really appealing to me, and in theory I love all of the flavors a bloody mary usually has but I felt the same way as you for a long time.  For me it was the tomato juice.  I love tomatoes, but I detest V8 and "normal' tomato juice.  To me, it tastes too cooked and it's a little like drinking cold tomato soup.  However, I recently tried a bloody mary made with Knudsen's tomato juice - which tastes really fresh, but has more body than just tomato water (which I've tried) and less fuss than pureed fresh tomatoes (another experiment).  I don't work for them or anything, I just thought their juice was really yummy, especially the spicy version.  I get mine at Whole Foods but I've seen it for sale in bigger "normal" markets too.
