Definition: Bouillon

Another term for the word broth. Bouillon is a broth that is made by cooking poultry, meat, fish, or vegetables in water. After cooking, the solids are discarded and the strained, leftover liquid is the bouillon. This broth serves as the base for soups and sauces.

A bouillon cube is the broth in a compressed, flavor-concentrated, dehydrated form. Cubes must be dissolved into a hot liquid before using.

when i was in europe, i had the opportunity to visit a tannery because a friends father owned it. they were using blow torches to melt the remaining fat off of large animal hides, allow it to run off and collect in small tanks. my friend told me they then use that yucky substance to flavor boullion cubes : / i still use 'em though :)

My husband loves bouillon diluted in hot water with cooked rice. He does love his salt!

This is a great item to have on hand and it does come in many different flavors-chicken, beef,fish, vegetable,and lamb. BUT is it salty! There are other brands that are available that are sodium free.

i eat this sometimes when i'm cooking with it. so bad for my sodium intake but i like it anyway. maybe humans should have salt licks too.

I use this all of the time! It's so flavorful. I used to use, and make my own broth, but this adds much more flavor. Also I usually never add salt to my dishes when I use this. I'm not big on salt anyway!

love this stuff but people always look at me a bit crazy when I ask them to get for me from the pantry. It is not as common as a ingredient as i thought.

I'm not crazy nuts over this stuff...too salty for me. I like to make my own and freeze it, but I usually have several cans of Swanson's 1/3 Less Sodium on hand in case I run out.

I used this a lot to make my rice (that being Meican rice). It adds so much flavor. Plus it's a great alternative to using acutal broth.

oo I use this one frequently. There's another one I just discovered without MSG. I'll have to check back in later and post the name of it.
