Cheese Curds: Love Them or Hate Them?

I was first introduced to cheese curds or "squeaky cheese" by a Wisconsin native who had to convince me that the deformed chunks of cheese swimming in a liquid-y substance in the bottom of a plastic bag were actually delicious. Then she had to hide the bag to prevent me from consuming the entire bounty of salty, cheesy goodness.

Made from the solid parts of soured milk, the real deal should squeak when you bite into them, and I've since discovered that it's not easy to find fresh cheese curds with the correct texture. If you don't live in Canada or Midwestern states where they are a popular part of the cuisine (like in poutine), the other tasty way to enjoy them is deep-fried! I've had the deep-fried nuggets at both bars and fairs, and they never disappoint!

Have you tried cheese curds? What did you think?

Cheese curds are amazing and so addictive, but then I was born in Canada and ended up moving to MN - so they're in my blood. (probably both figuratively and literally) I'm not sure what "liquid-y substance" at the bottom of the bag the author is talking about in the article above, I've NEVER had that in the curds I've purchased. BTW, you can order fresh curds online at http://greenleafcheese.com/

@amber, I also tried them at the Tillamook cheese factory and didn't like them at all. Maybe we have to go to other states to get good ones!!

Curd me! But in all fairness, I am a Minnesotan. We pretty much bleed curds.

I think they're pretty good (they're cheese after all, how bad can it get? :D), but there is better cheese in this world. Never had them deep fried.

HATE HATE HATE! The texture was awful and after the first "squeak" I spit it out. I tried it at the Tillamook cheese factory. The other cheeses were so much better!
