Creative Ideas For Wonton Wrappers

Creative and Delicious Fillings For Wonton Wrappers?

Readers, nicmic113 needs our help! Recently, she came across a sale for wonton wrappers. However, she doesn't know what to fill them with. She used our new ask feature in the YumSugar Community and proposed the question to the Kitchen Goddesses:

While i was shopping the other day, I saw a sale for wonton wrappers. I picked them up convinced I could find something to stuff them with. A week later, I still haven't had any great ideas aside from a plain and boring mixture of beef/pork. Any ideas?

Now I am asking you: what are some creative ways to fill wonton wrappers? Let's think outside the classic beef and pork box!

Make them Indian style. I boil potatoes, add in peas some fresh ginger, cumin and some indian biryani spices and then you can bake them. I make a yogurt sauce to dip them in because they will be spicy!

Watercress. Or yes, as yumsugar mentioned fresh pasta but you really need stir it as you place the wonton skins in. They have a tendency to be.... starchy? And be sure to place them in slowly. You don't need to cut them into noodles - a flat wonton skin is sooo good.

I once wrapped the wonton wrappers with sushi rice mixed with flavored mushrooms (dried mushrooms cooked with mirin, soy sauce, and sake), carrots, and shredded egg. It was really delicious! Another thing I made was by filling it with rice mixed with Chinese sausages which was also divine - you can flavor it with soy sauce or anything you like~

Or use sauteed chopped mushrooms (shiitake) in a little cream and garlic, with some chopped water chestnuts for crunch, and steam the little packets for a little bit so the wonton skin is softened.. I could go on and on...starving and waiting for lunch hour :(

Apple samosas - fill with an apple & cinnamon mixture, fold into triangles, and pan-fry with a litte butter :) Dim sum like - wrap with shrimp and chives into little packets, and steam!

I fill them with canned pie filling, pan fry them and give them a sprinkle of powdered sugar. Probably not the healthiest thing you can do with your wonton skins, but they are TASTY! :P

Aside from filling them, just baking them makes crispy chips. I've used them for dips.

Ooooh! I'll be buying wontons soon! I think that these would be great for many leftovers. I do something similar with eggs by making an omelet filling with odds and ends at least once per week.

I second butternut squash ravioli. So good. I've also used faux turk'y and cranberry sauce to make ravioli. This recipe: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/giada-de-laurentiis/turkey-and-cranberry-ravioli-recipe/index.html The sauce is amazing.

butternut squash ravioli!! there's a ton of recipes online out there...the one i used included roasted butternut squash puree, ricotta, sage, and nutmeg. (i subbed finely minced onion & garlic for the shallot and used turkey bacon instead of pancetta) delicious!! http://find.myrecipes.com/recipes/recipefinder.dyn?action=displayRecipe&recipe_id=1916215
