Cupcake Trend Fading

What Will Be the New Cupcake?

Cupcakes have taken the world by storm and although it seemed like there was no sign of stopping the little cake that could, according to Nation's Restaurant News, the trend could finally be slowing. Food forecasters are predicting that Americans are ready to move onto the next big dessert craze. But what exactly will that be?

There are plenty of options: doughnuts, macarons, mini cupcakes, pie, petit fours, cake balls, whoopie pies, even bacon. OK, that last one was a joke, but really, I want to know your feelings about this. There was a time when I thought macarons would be the new cupcake; however, the French treat is too difficult to make and probably won't go completely mainstream. Can the cupcake actually be replaced? What do you think will be the next cupcake?

Never, ever joke about BACON. *hands on hips, right foot tapping* ;) I'm kinda hoping that it will be the return of the Pudding Pop. This crazy world just needs a bit of familiar and comforting Bill Cosby on stick at the moment.

Oh, I like the sound of gourmet popsicle. I make some fun ones at home already, like pineapple, banana, and coconut mile blended together and frozen. :)

Cupcakes are just too wonderful to ever fade, but has anyone noticed the resurgence in popsicles? I swear gourmet popsicles seem to be the next big thing.

I don't think cupcakes are replaceable. Part of the reason for their success is the portability and the fact that it is essentially a "mini" cake. Portion control AND easy clean up...can't beat that! :-) I agree that possibly hand-pies could have some success, but they still won't replace the cupcake. It's like a tiny indulgence that you don't feel guily about.....

cake truffles! Of course I've never made them but I had them at an NYC bakery and nearly died. If not that, then I'll say anything that combines bread, brie, and dark chocolate would get my vote.

I hate those cake ball things, they are a mess to make and do not really taste appetizing. I'd much rather have a cupcake and if not a cupcake then I like the mini pie craze!

I don't think it will replace the cupcake, but brownies should really get more love!

I'm over them all. Maybe handpies? Pie is timeless, but it's not dainty and portable enough. Something like a handheld pie adds the precious factor.
