Details From the 2010 Burger Bash Hosted by Rachael Ray

10 Things I Learned at Rachael Ray's Burger Bash

Last night the festivities at the Food Network's annual South Beach Wine and Food Festival kicked off with the highly anticipated Burger Bash hosted by Rachael Ray. The line to get inside stretched from the beach to the street and the place was packed. There were celebrity chefs and well-known food personalities everywhere: serving burgers (Bobby Flay, Daniel Boulud, and Michael Symon), mingling with the crowds (Anne Burrell, Sam Talbot, Sandra Lee), and judging the competition (Art Smith and Carla Hall). I was in attendance and while I had my fair share of scrumptious burgers and amazing side dishes, I learned a thing or 10 at the party. To find out what they are,

.

  1. A TON of people attend the Burger Bash. Seriously, the place was very packed. There were lines everywhere and it was hard to walk around.
  2. Morimoto sure can draw a crowd. His booth was the most popular; he had a never-ending line all night.
  3. Spike Mendelsohn knows how to make a really good burger. His classic burger with bacon and American cheese on a soft bun was my favorite.
  4. John Cusimano is incredibly short. I happened to be standing right next to him and thought, "Who is this super short guy? He looks so familiar." Then I realized it was Rachael Ray's husband!
  5. Bobby Flay is as cute and charming in real life as he is on television.
  6. Rocco Dispirito doesn't care if he serves burnt buns. My bun was black.
  7. Stephanie Izard makes the most delicious ham French fires. Yes, you read that correctly, I said, ham French fries.
  8. In real life Carla Hall is stunning. She's statuesque, beautiful, calm, and perfectly poised.
  9. Govind Armstrong makes a mean croquette. I went back for his chorizo and potato croquettes three times!
  10. Sadly, there still aren't a lot of female chefs out there. The majority of chefs that competed were male.

Michael Symon and his burger with Swiss, pastrami, and coleslaw was the winner. Unfortunately, it was not one of the burgers I tried!

Bobby Flay was so nice and very charming. He stopped and took pics with all the fans and really mingled. Morimoto was a total ham (in a good way), I never would have used the word 'silly' to describe him before Saturday night...but he was!!! I feel like I want to add a miss #11...Rachel Ray is a phony snob. When she was on stage she was the "awwww shucks, girl next door" type. The SECOND the camera was off she stopped smiling, looked at watch, acted bored and was swooped up by body gaurds. They whisked her through the crowd like they were the Secret Service ushering the President through a shoot out. It was ridiculous. No one else acted like that at all--not even a little. Most celbs had handlers who waited off stage and made sure fans didn't sneak back stage or anything, but when they were actually at the events--events they are getting paid to be at---they acted like they wanted to be there. She seemed bored and annoyed...except when the cameras were rolling. I was a fan before, but I am very turned off now. That being said, everything else was amazing and I plan on going again next year.

I agree, Spike makes a great burger. I think the burgers at Good Stuff are my second favorite, coming in just a hair behind Shake Shack's burgers. But, that could be because I like a few blocks from Good Stuff, so I can have it whenever I want, but I can only get Shake Shack the few times a year I'm in NYC. Did you get to try Spike's Village Fries or his Toasted Marshmallow Shake? Both also excellent!

And "anon" the article did not state it was about cooking "tips"...it was about the experience of attending the bash. This site is not just about preparing food.

I agree, that pic up there looks undercooked, kinda icky. Also, Rocco Dispirito is an ass... of course he serves burnt buns. I do need to check out Spikes burger place in D.C... I live less about a half hour away from that area.

I think that sandwich in the main photo looks kinda gross. I don't like thick buns like that one either. I don't like tasting more of the bread than whats on the sandwich. Although, I have seen plenty of Rachael's burgers (that she makes on her show) and most of them look pretty good.
