I buy black rice in Dallas area Asian markets. (Kudos to Vietnam Plaza Mkt on Beltline and Josey) It runs around $1.50/lb

I have a simple microwave rice cooker that makes perfect rice every time - I can add spices, broth, veggies if I want. I don't remember the last time I cooked rice conventionally, unless it was risotto. I think it was under $10 at Tuesday Morning, and it was one of those "pick up on a whim" things. Best "whim" I ever had! :-)

YumSugar, you should check out this rice cooker on Amazon. It has settings for different types of rice and I think it makes the best rice! Plus, look how cute the rice cooker is. Yeah, it is a bit expensive, but definitely well worth it, it'll even do brown rice. :) You can set it to turn on at certain times like when have it cooking when you come home from work or something. Maybe you should check this out as your next possible rice cooker if you go back I mean. Plus, if this one is too big for you, there's a smaller one as well. http://www.amazon.com/Zojirushi-NS-ZCC10-Cooker-Warmer-Premium/dp/B00007J5U7/ref=pd_bbs_7?ie=UTF8&s=home-garden&qid=1200964174&sr=8-7

Yumsugar - whatever you do, don't get the Panasonic one-cup mini rice cooker - it overboils and undercooks rice!!!

I've had forbidden and also Bhutanese red. Both are very good, but can you justify rice that costs more per pound than steak?

AmberHoney - I grew up using a rice cooker (there was always hot rice at our house). I used to have one, but I have very little counterspace and usually have at least one burner open. So a few years ago I switched over to a heavy bottomed pan and it works out perfectly - once i got the timing down right. the forbidden rice was the first time I've ever had a mess. I keep thinking I'll get a rice cooker again — my mom keeps trying to force on me — but I don't know where i would put it. There's no space for it to live on the counter, and no cupboard to put it in when it's not in use. Ah, such is the sacrifice for a citylife!

I hope the family farmers are getting a fare price for that expensive rice.

My hubby is the starch monster in our house, but I haven't seen this Forbidden Rice and I'd love to. YumSugar, try a rice cooker - it's the easiest way to cook any kind of rice. I've used the same one for 25 years and never produced a bad batch of rice.

I've tried the Forbidden Rice, the Bhutanese Red Rice and the Kalijira Rice (white). I love them all. I think they each have a distinct flavor and can really jazz up a boring old rice dish. I have found them both at Albertson's and Whole Foods, I think they also have them at Wild Oats.

Forbidden Rice sounds like something you could make for a valentine's day dinner.

Serendipitous - I could be mistaken, but I am pretty sure I have seen it at both Safeway and Whole Foods. But then I'm a dork who wanders the aisles of grocery stores looking for things I've never seen before ;)

I liked the nutty flavor, and I buy it when I'm looking for something different. It's very tasty and pretty.

Pretty interesting. So you can find this at most grocery stores, or just specialty stores? Since you said they've often caught your eye, I don't recall ever seeing this type of rice around at my grocery store, but I will definitely be on the lookout.
