I definitely want to get a cast iron dutch oven and also a skillet. But I'll probably wait until I'm not a student anymore (I mean, I'm already waiting to buy a lot of other kitchen stuff until then too). @spectra: try using glass bakingware. It turns out great cornbread for me.
Lucky you Fuzzles! I love cooking with this stuff. Received an uncoated one for a wedding present and used gift cards/checks to pick up a lot of Le Creuset and Descoware 2nd hand from consignment shops, Salvation Army, and local eBay sellers. The stuff can last practically forever so there are great condition pieces out there second hand.
Need one soooo bad!
The key to using cast iron is to make sure it's well seasoned and to never let water touch it! I've made that mistake on more than one occasion! Cast iron is wonderful because it heats so evenly!
I need one so bad! I can't make decent cornbread without one.
Yes, and when taken care of it's the easiest to clean. Upside down cakes are best done in CI; amongst a 100 other dishes.
My husband cooks anything and everything in cast iron. It can't be beat! Most of our pieces are by Lodge- they make nice, affordable non-enameled cast iron. If you want enameled, Le Creuset is definitely the way to go.
Yes! Le Creuset all that way! I purchased my first piece--a small enameled Dutch oven--about ten years ago. In recent years, my Mom has been giving me pieces from her collection. By far the best cookware I have ever used.
Oh that happened to my mother in law! My father in law was "cleaning the house" and threw out all her cast iron cookware. She said she got home and was devastated.
Mine too, syako. A couple of years ago I was looking for my parents and was shocked to learn my dad had gotten rid of it!
It's definitely on my "to buy" list.
I don't have one but have been wanting to get one.
Yum, I'd be interested to know what types of foods or dishes are best prepared with a cast iron skillet. Is there a big difference?
