Wild Magelet, I was at a restaurant in Auckland last night that has pictures on the menu. They serve Vietnamese food and my friends and I just memorise the number that we usually get. I love the pictures because the food tastes even better than you can imagine...YUM!

Yeah. You dont have to read the name and wonder what it is, you just point to what looks good and say "I want that one" lol just kidding

A few run-down places do this, but so do really fancy restaurants that people only have to guess what they're ordering... so I really appreciate it though, for example... I just fell in love with Indian food, but have NO idea what each item is called... so if they have pictures, I'll be so excited and eager to point at the picture instead of describing what it looks like (I can just imagine it now..."what KIND of curry miss?") like an idiot :)

I don't know if its a bad thing, but i'm so influenced by the pictures in menus that 90% of my orders in restaurants are dishes that have pictures!

Although I guess it could be helpful! :) As long as what you get actually looks like the photograph, and it isn't a case of magazine food photography where everything is sprayed with paint gloss and stuff.

There is a wonderful, authentic Mom and Pop Thai place in my area that does this. I don't mind and, actually, appreciate it. Some of the food is unfamiliar to me, and the appearance of the food helps me decide what to order.

Apart from fast food places, I'm not sure I've ever seen or heard of a restaurant in New Zealand that puts pictures on the menu.

The picture menus usually scare me. The food never looks good, for some reason.

The only place I've been to that does this was this tiny gelato shop in Hamburg, Germany. And their pictures were high quality and looked like something out of a commercial. Since I'm not totally fluent in German, the pictures helped a lot. Oh and the gelato looked just as good!

Of course I'd eat there. It helped quite a bit when traveling through Europe. Some menus weren't in english (in the small towns of some countries) but they had picture menus and it helped us decide if and what to eat. though most cities and towns now carry english menus to serve tourists. yay! Though I do go by description more, and if i am confused on an ingredient, I just ask the waiter. One thing that ticked me off though was that not all foods in the dish were listed in menus. Sometimes we get meals that didn't add "nuts hidden in sauce". What if I were allergic to nuts?? It wouldn't be fun finding those hidden jewels in my meal. That's not just in Europe though, sometimes here too! Whoops way off topic. ^_^

i don't necessarily think that pictures on the menu will turn me off - but it's not something that i search for. i think that most of the foods i order are easy to figure out since they are non-meat/chicken/fish dishes..but for some people who don't know exactly what something is - i think that it couldn't hurt. my fiance and i used to go to this diner in FL and well - they have LOTs of pictures and it was interesting - since they always warn you that pictures are suggestive and not necessarily representative of what you're going to get.

I would and have. The Thai place I love to go to near work has pictures. I find it helpful because I wouldn't know what it was just by the name sometimes.

I don't make a conscientious decision about it by any means. Usually, it's the mom and pop places that do this. And yes, they sometimes take the worst possible pictures of their food, but I'll still order it if it sounds good.

It is all about how the food looks when it is on your plate and how it tastes.
