Do You Taste Grapes Before You Buy Them?

Grapes are available year round, but their peak season is now. When you're purchasing grapes, do you test them by eating one first? Or do you just grab them and hope for the best?

I but nearly all my fruit/produce at our local farmers market. Where the sellers alway have their fruits for sampling. I rarely buy any of it at the local Krogers unless I am desperate. Plus I want to help support our local farmers and their produce.

never taste them before buying. Not because it's stealing but because of the dirt.

My grocery store usually has samples of most of the fruit. If they don't have a sample and you're worried, you can always find an employee and they will happily wash cut open some fruit for you. I've even seen them let a customer try some ice cream! You have to sample, so you know what you're getting.

I grew up overseas, where the farmers markets cut up a fruit for you so you can see that theirs is the best. Now, in America, I only go to farmers markets, because they'll let me try something like a grape or an apricot before I buy them. The farmers cooperative does it as well - I try never to go to grocery stores because they penalize consumers for their overpriced goods anyway. I like to give back to independent farmers.

I don't taste them b/c they're dirty - not because it's stealing.

i don't, but not because it's stealing... because they are not washed.

Never! Ugh... They are dirty! If you are willing to take the risk I don't see anything wrong with trying one but I wouldn't do it. If you really need to try one just ask. The produce guys are always very sweet & helpful in my store. (Raley's)

I don't, partly because they're dirty, but also because I don't want to get into trouble...my college roomie ate 3 skittles one time from the bulk candy dept. in a grocery store to see if they were stale (in the past, they were stale at this store), and they caught her on the security cameras and hauled her into the manager's office...over THREE SKITTLES. They didn't press charges, but they were really rude about it and I'm not sure she was really welcome after that.

I never had, b/c I can usually tell how they're going to taste by their ripeness. And, like buffyanne, I have to wash all produce before eating.

Never! They must be washed first. I do lightly squeeze them to see if they are firm.

I don't, but not because i thought it was stealing...because i never thought about it...although my grocery store cuts up a bit of the fruit and samples it so you know what you are buying..they do this for watermelon, pineapple, strawberries, grapes, etc.

Wow, fifenhorn, what a rude thing to do. You couldn't have just left her alone?

The reason I prefer farmer's markets is because they usually offer samples of the fruit they are selling, so you know whether it's good or not. If they cut up one peach and 8 people try it and buy some, it's a good business strategy, but they're offering.

As with the rest above, there not clean! Ick. I love grapes and buy them even when they are pricey.
