If you live in a cool weather clime, you're probably sick of Winter and willing it to go away. But why not embrace it? There's only one time to appreciate chilly climate favorites, and that's right now — when they're the most comforting. The classic English pub dish known as shepherd's pie is the kind of fare that's most relished when you're bundled up and need a remedy for the cold.

These two variations are both satisfying — yet they couldn't be more different. The beginner version, made with beef, employs the help of prepared mashed potatoes, and takes less than half an hour; the expert version is made with lamb, and epitomizes shepherd's pie at its best. i always mix a can of cream of mushroom soup with the beef... it makes it really moist and yummy

I've always thought a shepherds pie was made with lamb and a cottage pie was made with beef. I put tomato pasta sauce in my with my meat and whole garlic cloves in with the potatoes when I boil them. They end up with a lovely flavor when they're mashed in with the potatoes. I usually serve it will vegetables rather than putting a heap of vegetables in the pie.

My recipe uses ground beef, onions, mushrooms, carrots, peas, garlic, red wine, marjoram, Wocestershire sauce, gravy, and buttermilk mashed potatoes. Major comfort food!

I love Shepherd's pie, but I use ground turkey instead of beef. And, as far as veggies go, I only use corn. I don't like peas and carrots in it.

My usual recipe is sadly more like the first than the second. Instead of ketchup, I use a can of cream of tomato soup (low sodium) and real mashed potatoes because I hate prepackaged taters. Still use the frozen veggies though because I always have those on hand.

I just made shepherd's pie for the first time this week from a recipe I obtained from Rescue Chef on Food Network. It's kind of between these two recipes - slightly more involved than your easy but not as much as your expert (it's also just ground beef but with a mixture of fresh and frozen veggies and real mashed potatoes). It was great! Highly recommend it for easy weeknight dinners (my hubby and 3 year old loved it)! Also easy to prepare ahead and refrigerate (or freeze) for later use!
