What the First Family Might Eat on Presidents' Day

Feb 18 2013 - 4:25am

With so many state dinners and committee meetings to attend, President Obama knows a thing or two about fine dining. But watching these formal festivities got me thinking that it must be a rare occasion when the commander in chief gets to eat what he's truly craving. Likewise, the first lady aspires to a day when school lunches teem with veggies grown behind the playground, but it's undoubtedly tough to score local produce when jetting between speaking engagements. So on a day dedicated to this nation's highest office, we're dreaming up a smorgasbord of Barack, Michelle, Sasha, and Malia's favorite foods. Though we're not certain what the first family will be up to today, we hope they enjoy something good to eat!

The president loves his snack foods! Watching an Oregon State University basketball game (coached by his brother-in-law), he enjoys a bag of popcorn. But his former body man Reggie Love admits [4] that the commander in chief requests healthier alternatives to keep on hand, like almonds, pistachios, Planters trail mix, and MET-Rx protein bars.

Fresh Vegetables

The first lady has undoubtedly influenced the family's eating habits, planting a victory garden [6] on the White House grounds and encouraging her kids to eat local and green. Whether or not the family allows themselves a treat today, they will undoubtedly get their fill of fresh, seasonal veggies.

In The Obama Menu: Dining with Barack Obama [8], the president reveals that he's been making his family's chili recipe since college and that it's a potluck fave. When there's no time to cook, he hits up Ben's Chili Bowl in Washington DC, ordering up a chili half smoke.

Hawaiian Shave Ice

When the Obamas vacation in the Pacific, Island Snow Hawaii is a must stop for this chilly treat. Washington is a long way from Oahu, so we wonder if the White House kitchen has invested in a special ice shaving machine yet!

Chocolate-Covered Macadamia Nuts

A reminder of the president's birth state, a box of these Hawaiian treats are undoubtedly a White House staple. According to his former body man Reggie Love, the President also craves handmade milk chocolates from Fran's in Seattle. [11]

The White House harvests its own honey from hives kept on the grounds and even Jay Leno agrees that it's some of the tastiest around [13]. The honey went into the White House's first homebrew, White House Honey Ale, which was freely distributed to the first family's 200 Super Bowl guests last year.

Ice Cream

The president ponied up his own cash for his family's ice cream on a trip to Yellowstone National Park in 2009. It may not be Italian gelato [16], but we're sure the kids enjoyed it nonetheless!

Lobster Rolls

While on vacation in Martha's Vineyard, the first family hit up Nancy's Snack Bar on Oak Bluffs Harbor, known for its lobster salad on a grilled roll. If they can sneak away for the day, let's hope they can enjoy this buttery delight!

The president regularly hits up Ray's Hell Burger in Arlington, VA, even bringing foreign dignitaries (like Russian president Dmitry Medvedev here in 2010) to join in the all-American experience. Michelle admits [18] that, like any other kid, if Sasha and Malia "could eat burgers, fries, pie, cake, ice cream every single day, they would." But Mom mandates a balanced diet, saving these treats for special occasions.

A Michelle Melt

At Good Stuff Eatery in Washington DC, Top Chef alum Spike Mendelsohn created a turkey burger in the first lady's honor [20]. Packed with all things flavorful and healthy, it could be just what the first family is craving today.

Dim Sum

During a trip to San Francisco, President Obama surprised patrons at a popular Chinese restaurant by stopping in to order takeout! We wonder what dim sum delectables [22] he chose for his staff.

And don't forget Bo, the first dog! We hope he gets plenty of treats, too, like the ones his brother Cappy enjoyed at Bo's birthday party.
