Gelato Shop in Rome Swamped With Eat Pray Love Fans

Eating at Movie or TV Locales: Love It or Hate It?

Before Eat Pray Love had even come out in theaters, female fans were already flocking to the hole-in-the-wall gelateria author Elizabeth Gilbert visits in her memoir the movie is based on.

We've seen this foodie fandom before, with Magnolia Bakery in Sex and the City, Seinfeld's Soup Nazi, San Diego's Kansas City Barbeque from Top Gun, the famous "o" scene in When Harry Met Sally at Katz's Deli in New York, Mystic Pizza, and the list goes on.

In my experience, once eateries are immortalized by the big (or little) screen, they get overly crowded, overly commercialized, and the quality decreases. But that's not always the case! What has been your experience?

I never have before, but it's not like I hate it.

depends if the food is actually good or not. i think it's funny when i see pictures on facebook of non-newyorkers at magnolia bakery. just cuz their cupcakes are not the best ever. i think people just convince themselves that it's awesome just because some tv show told them it was.

My only experience, and its really a bit of a stretch, was when I went to NYC and ate brunch at Pastis which is referenced a few times in sex and the city. Carrie and alexander petrovsky had lunch or something there on the show. Was very busy but food was yummy and the bustle just reminded us we were in new york lol

It's kind of a brush with fame, so I think it'd be cool to eat a place that had been on TV or in a movie. I haven't ever been to any restaurants that were famous enough to be in a movie or anything, but I'd definitely try one sometime.
