Now that Election Day's come and gone, what's left to celebrate? Why, Harvey Wallbanger Day, of course! We suggest ringing in today with at least one version of the drink.

The Harvey Wallbanger was a product of the 1970s, where it was the drink du jour at fern bars across the country. The Harvey, as it was affectionately known, eventually faded into oblivion as American drinkers gained more sophisticated palates, but it's nevertheless seen a small revival in recent years.

At its core, the Harvey is a booze-fueled citrus drink. The classic version calls for just three ingredients — orange juice, vodka, and the anise-tinged Galliano — while a more contemporary version adds lemon, honey, and New Orleans bitters for even more complexity. Martin Cate's Classic Harvey Wallbanger Recipe 2010-11-30 12:09:02

Ingredients

4 ounces fresh squeezed orange juice
1-1/2 ounces vodka
3/4 ounce 84.6 proof Galliano (new formula)

Directions

  1. Combine all ingredients into a shaker with ice and and shake until well chilled.
  2. Strain into an ice-filled collins glass. Garnish with an orange slice.

Makes 1 cocktail.

Martin Cate's Contemporary Harvey Wallbanger Recipe 2010-12-08 11:32:57

Ingredients

3/4 ounces fresh lemon juice
1-1/2 ounces fresh orange juice
3/4 ounce Galliano (new formula)
1/2 ounce honey syrup
1-1/2 ounces vodka
2 dashes Peychaud's bitters

Directions

  1. Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice; shake and strain over an ice-filled collins glass.
  2. Garnish with an orange slice, and dash an additional drop of Peychaud's on top.

Makes 1 drink.
