Hot! Hot! Hot Peppers!

There are hot peppers and then there are HOT peppers. This afternoon we were talking about the Scoville rating system and how some peppers are hotter than others. The Scoville scale measures how hot chili peppers are. The number of Scoville heat units indicate how much capsaicin is present in the pepper. Capsaicin is the chemical compound responsible for the hot sensation you feel when eating a pepper.

Recently, an ESPN reporter casually took a bite out of a Bhut Joloki pepper, not realizing how hot it would be. Not even milk could cut the heat. If you want to see how he handled it,

I started to get worried when he touched his eyes later in the segment (thankfully with his other hand), because hot pepper resin on fingers and then those in your eyes? PAINFUL!

Hee! I've seen that pepper grower on the Food Network before, he always cracks up at the different tv personalities that eat his peppers. I love hot peppers, but not that hot!

I love how he took another bite!! That was probably the funniest game break segment I've ever seen, they're usually so annoying. Although if it was a game I wanted to see I probably still woulda been mad, hehe.

Mamaseacat, green peppers are not spicy at all (seriously, not even a tiny, tiny bit), and you shouldn't be afraid! They are quite delicious and contain lots of water.
