How Popular Are Greek Wines in America?

Have You Ever Enjoyed Greek Wine?

Don't know much about Greek wine? Neither did I, but yesterday I had my first taste of it at a lunch hosted by the Wines of Greece. Once I got past the fact that the names were a mouthful (Moschofilero, Agiorgitiko, and Xinomavro, anyone?), I loved the whites for their bracing acidity, and the reds for their nice balance of earth and fruit. Have you sought out grapes from Greece?

Yes, it was the Sigilas! I can't wait to go hunt it down.

Hi Susannah - I think the assyrtiko-athiri blend you read about is from Sigalas. It's an excellent wine at an great price (around $15) and glad you liked the Dafni - a lot of people were really suprised I think by the really unique herbal notes.

Susannah, great, Dafni is truly unique and also is one of the oldest ancient grape varieties known. It might be the oldest grape variety still in production today. Sure glad you enjoyed it.

I'm curious about the Assyrtiko-Athiri blends I keep reading about! I also found a grape I really enjoyed: Dafni.

Glad to see the shout-out for Greek wines. The modern wine industry in this country is actually rather young, and the last two decades have seen an amazing progress. By now some of the most individual and exciting wines come from Greece. I might also suggest Assyrtiko, Robola, and Malagousia in addition to the varietals you mentioned.
