Let's Dish: Top Chef 4.9 — Wedding Wars

Now that the super-sized wedding themed episode of Top Chef is over — hope your TiVo didn't cut it off! — I want to know what you thought of it. Were you excited by the wedding wars? How about the relay? What about all the drama at the end? Let's dish all about it when you

.

  1. I thought it was interesting that the teams started the last leg of the relay at the same time. Speaking of relay, it was fun to see it again, no?
  2. Are you bummed that there's no restaurant wars? Do you think wedding wars is a good replacement?
  3. If Antonia knew crispy chicken wouldn't work, why'd she let Andrew do it?
  4. I can't imagine cooking for that long. I was tired watching them! Their poor backs and feet!
  5. Did you notice that the bride had two different wedding dresses?
  6. How great was it that Richard ended up splitting his win with Stephanie?
  7. Do you think Nikki deserved to go home?
  8. What did you think of all the Spike-Dale drama at judge's panel?
  9. Which cake would you rather eat? The chocolate groom's cake or the traditional bride's cake?
  10. And finally, the Andrew quote of the week: I'm like Popeye's wet f***ing dream right now.

i really liked this episode. i actually really liked the idea of having two cakes, especially if at your wedding there's going to be kids. for example, on my special day, i would want the traditional but really gourmet cake, but i think its a good idea to have a simple chocolate cake for kids or more picky eaters. the second cake doesn't even need to be displayed, just offered.

I don't think it was two wedding dresses i thought it was the same dress but it was bustled (I believe that's the right word)

Rabit88 i love anything about weddings too... who doesn't!? :P i think, that if i dont get married i'll be a wedding planner :P because i LOVE weddings! i even cry at an extrangers wedding... imagine that

1. stuff like that gives me heart palpatations... i get so nervous watching... between the suspense and me thinking someone was going to hurt themself... i'm a loser though so maybe it's just me. 2. I LOVE anything wedding. so this was a great substitute for restaraunt wars. plus it annoyed me that they got to do it twice last time anyway. 3. self preservations kiddies! if they went down... her hands were clean of that chicken. pretty much eliminating andrew. 4. I can't even function not getting 8 hours of sleep.. i get sick to my stomach... 5. the second she came on screen at the reception... i turned to my boyfriend... "a second dress???" i could understand if it was shorter... or less formal ... or something... but it looked so similar to the first one... that it didn't really make much sense. 6. every week i like him more and more. i think he is actually a genuinely nice guy... and extremely talented to boot! 7. yeah Dale summed it up pretty well. "why are you still here"... honestly. you are GIVEN the challenge.. italian food. and you can't step up and lead the team?? cowardly. and you can't make mayonnaise by hand?? i don't get it. so when is Lisa leaving? 8. i think it was played up by the cameras. i mean they hugged on the way out. i like spike's realness and i like dales passion. i think they are both talented but i think dale was just frustrated with the group that he was given. 9. i'm all about chocolate cake... although the way it looked on the outside... i probably wouldn't have tried it. 10. the culinary boner... classic... but odd. he kind of weirds me out in a pedophile/ stalker kind of way... i don't know... there is something very strange.

Rather interestingly, no elimination challenge winner has been booted off the show yet. And the only person remaining who hasn't won an elimination challenge is Spike. Richard won 3 (2 solo, 1 with Dale), Stephanie and Dale have each won 2 (though indeed, if you count Richard's sharing with Stephanie this week, then Stephanie's also won 3), and Andrew, Lisa, and Antonia have each won 1.

I love the relay challenge, it really shows who has the basic skills you need to be a good chef. It was clearly a sign that Nikki doesn't have the skills and needed to pack her knives and go. Thought Dale's knife skills were better than that, punching a locker never solved anything, you just end up with a bruised hand! I kind of liked wedding wars, it is a huge challenge and since the first season failed at the wedding challenge it was great to see a group succeed. When the teams were divided it was clear who was going to win. team fork was a dream team! except Andrew. Andrew I think just wouldn't listen to Antonia and it was to her advantage to have him fail. oh andrew... muzzles have their uses. Didn't notice the dress change, I was knitting and watching. I think Richard really is a nice guy and realized that Stephanie took the biggest risk, Howie gave his high end harbeque win to Joey in the Miami season so it wasn't the first time, but a bottle of wine compared to a $2000 shopping spree... Finally Nikki is gone! Yay! I kinda like Dale, though he was not on good behavior in that episode. I wish there had been no petty bickering at judging, Spike is so whiny! Andrew... oh andrew.....

1)I love the relay! good way to pick up the pace and coax a cry baby reaction out of Dale. 2)I much prefer restaurant wars, I agree with the other commenters that said this season is too into catering. 3)She gave him enough rope to hang himself. She knew that she wasn't the leader and there was enough for her to cover her own butt. 4)you know how you always hear how long elimination actually lasts? I really enjoyed noticing how fresh the winning team looked compared to the losers, then made the connection that they were hanging out in the waiting area with those bottles of wine a lot longer. 5)Nope, one track mind. food. 6)I think Richard is being a nice guy. I also think it's strategy. I explained to my top chef newbie last night how finalies involve your eliminated coming back to cook with you. 7)YES. I can not believe she was still there after her premade sausage with no peppers. What a joke. She belongs on a food-networks everyman type show. 8)Good for Spike for calling Dale out. If you are going to hissy fit at least use your big boy words and formulate a full statement or complaint. 9)Neither looked that good, then again I don't love cake :/ 10) Oh Andrew, the 15 year old boy section of my brain loves you. . . .

Forgot about the "little Blaises." This season is screaming for a top 10 quotes countdown. (I still don't think we've seen a replacement for "I'm not your bitch, bitch" yet, though.)

1) The relays are fun, although a bit "campy" for me, everyone gets so worked up (dale cussing and hitting locker) if i was tom i would have thrown the carcass of the monkfish at big crybaby dale. 2)I like the restaurant wars better than wedding wars, again with the catering BS, cmon Top Chef i really dont care to see anymore challenges based on what keeps in a chafing dish. 3)antonia "let" andrew do it because she wanted him to fail. 4) I really wanted to see someone napping on the cots, or what they did to stay alert, or what they fixed for themselves to eat. If Lisa had fallen asleep and I was there i would replace her 90's piercing in her face with a small meat thermometer. 5)Yea nothing says "give me more attention" than wearing two wedding dresses...her hair looked like crap though. 6)Richard splitting the win was pure strategy 7)Nikki totally deserved to go home, I mean she went on and on to the groom about "I am like italian too! no way!" and than she didnt bring it, didnt take control, didnt do anything but basically hide behind "oh jeez i have to make pasta again" 8)dale had a full diaper thats for sure, he whined and rolled his eyes more than a 11 year old girl. 9)I hate anything hazelnut, so the brides cake for me. 10)andrew needs his mouth washed out with soap.

1. Absolutely - it was fun. However, I don't think that's what TC's all about. It's about palate, it's about innovation. It's weird: I think there's been some sort of philosophy switch of late: the kiddies on Hell's Kitchen have been creating and inventing, and the cheftestants on TC are breaking down fish? 2. I am really bummed there wasn't a restaurant wars, because as the cheftestants said, this is what they're there to do - start a restaurant. They're not out to cater. 3. RoGo's got this one down: sending someone else's lousy food out will kill almost as fast as sending out your own lousy food. Hasn't anyone learned this? 4. I just got done with exams: pulling all-nighters doesn't earn them any sympathy from me. 5. I didn't notice until it was pointed out. I suppose not having to pay for catering meant that she had ample cash to spend on a separate dress. A lot of my friends do two dresses, but that's generally for a Chinese wedding where the ceremony will be in a western-style white poofy thing and the banquet will be in a sexy Asian-style dress. 6. Richard is such a gentleman. I'm still a little grossed out about his "little Blaises" quote from last week, but wow - nice job. Reminded me of Joey and Howie last season before everything went to hell. 7. This week? No - Spike was a jackass. Every other previous week? Absolutely. Good riddance! 8. Spike, you're right - it's a team effort, yes. Which means you should have pulled your weight more. Dale is a rock star, and Spike is the whiny b*tch. But Dale was unhappy since he lost the mise en place relay. I want Spike gone. I think Spike should have gone home this week. And Nikki should have gone home AGES ago. He needs to pack his fedora and go. 9. Not so much on the cake. I think I'd rather eat the bride's cake, though I'm personally a fan of pie. Not that I could ever get away with a wedding pie. 10. Amazing. I love both of Andrew's quotes this week. Dale is Hung without the skill or accent, but with plenty of attitude to back it up. To be clear, I didn't care for any of the other people on that team - Spike the misogynist, Nikki the whiner, and negative Lisa. But I'm so glad they're slowly but surely getting rid of the right people now. Ryan, Mark, Nikki, buh-BYE. I'm bummed about Zoi being gone, less so about Jen. But it's Richard's game to lose.

1)I am sooo happy that Nikki is gone, she was there way too long 2)Even though I'm happy she is gone, I wish it was Dale because I hate douchebags. 3)The grooms wedding cake was the ugliest thing I have ever seen. A cake at an elegant affair should look like you though it together at the last minute. 4)Spike, just have to say LOVE him. Though Richard is my favorite, Spike is just really cool 5)Even though this was about the food, I was obsessed with the bodice of the bride's second dress. So cute.

1 - That relay was the most suspenseful contest yet! It was also the first time my husband had seen a whole monkfish. The look on his face ... 2 - Sad to see the disappointment on all the contestants' faces when they were told there would be no restaurant wars. Mine, too. I love restaurant wars and miss the naming process especially. This is not Top Caterer! 3 - After so many seasons, you'd think the contestants would understand that letting other people push bad ideas through will send you home just as often as making bad food. 4 - Made me tired just watching them -- except for Richard, who was more or less as perky as ever. If you can be nice and coherent when you're that tired it says something about your character. Loving the Blais this week! 5 - I only noticed that pouffy dress at the buffet. Can't say I'm a fan. 6 - The cynic in me says Richard was really working on a nice guy image this week, but I adored it. 7 - Nikki had catering experience AND she was supposedly the Italian expert ... I think Dale would have listened to her if she had been more assertive and/or known what she was talking about more. She blew a chance to lead the team, used time unwisely, let those tooth-busting crostini go out and messed up her only specialty, pasta. Can you tell I think she deserved to go? 8 - It was clear Dale did a ton more than Spike and the rest. But instead of pouting he should have forced his team to sit down and come up with a plan. He can't have it both ways: Either he's more professional than the rest of them or he isn't. 9 - Groom's cake looked revolting, but the yummiest cakes are sometimes. I'd definitely eat it, but it was a crime to put a cake looking like that down at a wedding. 10 - "Andrew isn't allowed to speak to the guests." Totally! He's creepy. Why was he so stoked to stay up all night?!?!

1. I am a fan of the relay race, because its such a team effort, but i am kinda not a fan, because i LOVE seeing what type of quickfire that they can cook up. 2. I didnt miss resturant wars, I mean the wedding wars is a nice change, when you do things over and over, people expect it, and i really enjoyed the twist. 3. See that bothered me. Antonia should of spoken up. she is one of my favorites, and she lets people boss her at times. I mean its common sense, long sitting time=no crispy-ness. idiot. 4. I know, it was such a long time... i cant even imagine, but as always richard was wide awake, he really knows how to turn it on. 5. I DID NOTICE THAT, i was like heyyyy wait a minute, thats some big money right there. but they were both gorgeous dresses. 6. I give richard alot of credit for doing that for stephanie, cause that was a kick butt cake. She did a really good job, and i really believe they let her slip by with little recognition. 7. After thinking about it, i felt that made a good decision to send nikki home. she was just trying to save herself when she said she wasnt the executive chef. like hello hunny, who was taking charge from the first minute. she just doesnt know what its like to be a good leader. 8. Spike, even though he is a little CrAZZy, had a good point. dale was doing anything to say he was the big hard worker, and all he was doing was pointing fingers. Dale is very pompus in my eyes and i WOULD LOVE to see him go. i dont think he deserves to win honestly. 9. Stephanies!!! the combo and recipe sounded rather delicious 10. all i gotta say is wow, they come up with some weird stuff!

1. relay was awesome! 2. this is my 1st season watching i guess i have to netflix the other seasons...y'all are so hyped up about the restaurant wars...i want in! :-) 3. it's harder than it seems to sway a member of a "team" who wants to do something..these folks are all chefs and are used to calling shots...that being said, i think she probably said her peace, he didnt listen, and she didnt care enough to fight about it figuring it would have been him going home for it anyway... 4. they looked so sleepy! but they were troopers... 5. bride was a bore 6. rich/steph split was SO super sweet 7. YES glad nikki is gone! 8. Loved the drama! 9. Neither cake glad andrew gets "culinary boners"

I missed restaurant wars. I think it's more relevant to what the chef's are planning to do in life. I noticed the bride's dress change. I guess she wanted to dance in a pouffy dress? The "culinary boner" line was fantastic!!

I was not crazy about this episode - why do they want to take a chance on ruining someone's wedding?? (And, who would let them take a chance on wrecking their own wedding? Food is important!) I did not even notice that it went long; I watch the taped version on my DVR with one hand on the remote. Any time the "drama" starts, I fast forward. I really do like watching the cooking parts, and the quick fire challenge was great! It was very cool of Richard to give the prize to Stephanie; he's won so much that I'm sure it is starting to get a little embarrassing! :) I'm forecasting him to be the winner.

I can't decide which quote from Andrew is better. Either the one mentioned in the article above (Popeye's wet dream), or when he said that he had "a culinary boner" upon hearing that they would be cooking all night. I love Andrew.

1. I love, love, love relay . . . almost as much as I love palate testing. 2. I prefer restaurant wars to wedding wars, but wedding catering is also an important skill that restaurants will sometimes do. 5. I did notice that she had two dresses and I hate her. It's one thing to have a dress for your reception that is not another big pouffy wedding dress, and its quite another to wear a more opulent dress for your reception. 6. I love Blais. His split win with Stephanie made me all warm and fuzzy inside. 7. Yes, it was Nikki's time to go. She's good at simple comfort food, not fine dining. 8. Dale shouldn't have blamed Spike for not doing as much work. It seems like the guys had equal amounts, but Spike got mired in something that was ultimately considered a less valuable contribution. 9. That German chocolate grooms cake sounds tastier than the bride's cake.

Re: Antonia discouraging Andrew's chicken entree If you saw his repudiation of Richard's supervision and suggestions regarding the breading technique, it would have been clear he is not open to any suggestions, particularly from a woman. The other three team members, Stephanie, Antonia and Richard have proven themselves to be supportive of fellow team members where as Andrew doesn't really play well with anyone other than Spike.

I think Nikki sealed her fate when she quipped "Definitely not ME!" when the group was asked who was in charge. She was obviously the most qualified to lead the group but failed to step up. Result: Meal of a Thousand Courses, with no cohesion and precious little teamwork behind it. I did miss Restaurant Wars; I always enjoy seeing the teams come up with their themes and creating an atmosphere to go with the menu. This was basically just a team catering challenge, which has been done many times before.

btw, next week's episode sounds crazy! would someone really resort to sabotaging other people?

I am SO GLAD that Nikki went home. Yes, Dale is so annoying and egotistical, but at least he's shown, that he can take responsibility for his mistakes and victories. I thought it was so lame that Nikki didn't want to take any responsibility because she didn't want to cut. Lame. Glad she left. I wasn't surprised about the fight. Verily's right, I'm sure if I worked 24 hours straight with people who barely tolerate each other, I'd be fighting by the end too.
