Let's Dish: What's the Best Pizza You've Ever Had?

Let's Dish: What's the Best Pizza You've Ever Had?

Thanks to an article that names the top 25 pizzerias in the United States, the food world has been obsessed with pizza this week. Alan Richman of GQ even believes that pizza is more American than it is Italian. He says,"pizza isn’t as fundamental to Italy as it is to America. Over there, it plays a secondary role to pasta, risotto, and polenta. To be candid, I think they could do without it. Not us. Over here, it’s one of the few foreign foods we’ve embraced wholeheartedly, made entirely our own." I have to agree with him — I think there's some amazing pizza in the US. My favorite kind is the creative, thin-crusted variation they serve at a pizzeria in my hometown. Combine that with a welcoming, European atmosphere and the fact that I normally share the pizza with my closest loved ones, and you've got the best pizza I've ever had.

How about you? What was the best pizza you've ever had and why is it so memorably delicious?

I won't wait in line for pizza at Sally's or Pepe's or Modern in New Haven, CT. We love the pizza at BAR on Crown Street - same yummy thin crust, no standing in line!!!! Here in Portland, we love Apizza Scholls on Hawthorne. Very close to New Haven "apizza"! YUM!!!!

STL has my fave kind of pizza - delicious thin crusts! Fortel's and Imo's have great pizzas, especially veggie or cheese.

Strangely, the best pizza I've ever had was at a tiny pizzeria in San Miguel, El Salvador. It was owned by an Italian couple that immigrated there and opened this tiny little restaurant. The pizza had a nice thin crust, fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced vine ripened tomatoes and fresh basil. It was better than any pizza I've ever had here.

I've been spoiled by the pizzas I've eaten in Italy... whenever I go to a place here that claims they have "real Italian-style pizza", I always look for the egg in the middle of the pizza. lol (I know, not all of them have that... but I've yet to see one here in the US that does have that...)

Can't beat pizza in Italy. Its just different. Love the prociutto pizza. And oddly enough, found a place in Milwaukee, WI on Marquette's campus that is amazing - Angelos. Especially their bambino. Mmmmmmmmm.
