MediaCarts Make Shopping Easier, but Is It Worth It?

Do you ever wander the aisles of a grocery store hunting for a particular item and wish there was an easy way to find it? Well the folks at Microsoft have partnered with the Wakefern Food Corporation and will provide their customers with grocery cart-mounted consoles that will help them navigate the store. It also allows them to scan and pay for their items without waiting in line. Like a self-checkout line without the line.

The companies plan to test the MediaCart in Wakefern's east coast ShopRite supermarkets. The cool part is you'll be able to upload your shopping list at home, and download it on your shopping cart console by swiping your loyalty card. You'll also be able to scan as you go so that you can see how much you're spending.

So why are they doing this? Do they just want to create a good experience for their customers? The answer is yes and no. Yes they do, but they also have ulterior motives, you see the carts are also equipped with RFID devices so that ShopRite can understand shopping patterns. You'll also be subjected to ads in certain parts of the grocery store. For example, if ice cream is on sale, as you walk past the ice cream aisle, your console will receive those ads.

So what do you think? Do you think easy checkout and shopping lists are worth the ads and the shopping pattern tracking?

the no lines is great...but the ads part is weak. there are enough ads in my life and frankly I am sick of companies cramming them in where ever they can.

This is so cool! It would definitely make my life easier. With 4 kids I hate walking around the grocery with them asking for this and that. If I had this I could show them exactly what we were there for and ask them to help pick them out. Or if I send my husband to the grocery I don't have to deal with him calling me 10 times just to make sure he is getting the right item that is on the list I wrote down for him!

Ahh...technology! This would be great if you were a mother, w/ your kids at the grocery store.

I love the idea, very useful and handy! I'm just afraid people would abuse it or steal the carts for whatever crazy reasons they have! ;)

I used something similar at Pathmark years ago; you just couldn't pay from it. I liked it alright.

Many years ago Schnucks used to have these things on their carts and I always thought it was a lot of fun because you could do so many different things aside from look up where food would be in the store. But then they took them away for some reason. I guess these things are making a comeback?

I like how it would show you your total but I don't think I would like the ads. I don't need anymore ads or commercials in my life.

Yeah, I agree with the general consensus here - the ads wouldn't really bother me (especially if they're not TALKING to me, just scrolling on the screen) - I think we all learned to ignore ads long ago (or else we wouldn't be able to stand looking at the majority of the internet!). I do a weekly grocery trip with a husband and a list, but sometimes when you're planning to try out a new recipe and you're not used to buying, say, oil-packed sun dried tomato halves, this could save 10-15 minutes of meandering around the store looking for the elusive item. Can you tell that happened to me just last week?! Plus the no check-out line thing is awesome :) If they can combine it with that online coupon thing that Savvy talked about the other day, I'll be in love!

Oooohhh. I need a cart like this. I get lost in my 4 different markets all the time. I actually go to the one I like the least, most of the time because it's easiset to find stuff in. This could elminate my problem!

That seems pretty cool! I like it. Definitely worth the ads... so long as they are silent.

I like how you can scan it to get the price and also add your total up as you go. Budget-friendly.

I saw this on Modern Marvels: Supermarkets yesterday. It seemed pretty handy, a lot better than a few other devices they were showing. I really liked the function of the device showing you where items on your list are located in the store.

I like it. It's great for the infrequent shopper like myself. I never know where anything is in the store. And I'm constantly trying to keep a running tally of how much I'm spending. As for the ads and tracking, I'm an advertising major I got over the whole invasion of privacy/advertising thing awhile ago.

This sounds cool, especially for those trips where you need to get A LOT or you're trying a new recipe and aren't quit sure to where to find some of the ingredients.

I want this!!!!!! I saw this on a show called "I want that!" and I really really do!!!!!! It looks like it would be fun. And it would save a lot of time! I hate standing in line at the grocery store! Anywhere else it doesn't bother me but sometimes the grocery store lines move SO slow!

I kind of like the idea. In the grocery store we shop in, they have little handheld zappers that we take throughout the store and scan items before we put them in the cart. Saves time on checkout, I can see the running total at any time, and my husband likes to use it (geek!) and so he actually comes with me.I like that I can upload my list to it. And I suppose I could ignore the ads - are they silent???
