Lee begins her journey with the tale of how the Powerball lottery was once almost brought down by a set of lucky numbers printed in dozens of fortune cookies. She follows with fun facts about the origins of the cookies, as well as of chop suey and General Tso's chicken. But this book isn't as lighthearted as you might think.
Lee isn't a food writer by trade, so for fans of Ruth Reichl and other literary foodies, the descriptions of favorite dishes may feel somewhat bland. But Lee excels in her reporting, traveling across the globe to track down forgotten facts and revealing a restaurant network fueled by ads in Chinese-language newspapers peddling ready-made businesses to newly arrived immigrants. Many of the stories are downright tragic, as the author uncovers the often high human price of all those Hunan meals.
