Cadbury's Racially Charged Chocolate Ad Offends Naomi Campbell

Remember Duncan Hines's controversial "Hip Hop Cupcakes" commercial? Well, it wasn't the first (and certainly isn't the last) supermarket food campaign that's wrought with racially charged undertones.

The latest company to fall under attack is candy company Cadbury, which has come under fire for a new advertisement comparing supermodel Naomi Campbell to one of its latest products. The ad's tagline reads: "Move over Naomi, there's a new diva in town," with an image of its Bliss chocolate bar.

An infuriated Campbell fired back, "I am shocked. It's upsetting to be described as chocolate, not just for me, but for all black women and black people. I do not find any humour in this. It is insulting and hurtful." Members of the civil rights community have asked Cadbury to apologize, and Campbell is reviewing her options against the company. Meanwhile, Cadbury has countered with an insistence that their campaign was "a light-hearted take on the social pretensions of Cadbury Dairy Milk Bliss," although they've stopped circulating the ad.

In today's socially conscious culture, It's hard to believe that this classless campaign made it all the way to consumers. Cadbury: do the right thing, and issue an apology, otherwise you're almost sure to face a consumer boycott.

I totally agree with U2forlife...I did not think that Naomi was mad about the Chocolate/black thing, but for being a cell phone throwing diva! I also agree with onlysourcherry...public apologies for EVERYTHING dilutes its meaning.

I'm really not offended by this at all. When I think Naomi Campbell, words like "crazy" "cell phone violence" and "raging b****" are basically what come to mind, not "black woman." Her brand transcends her race, and that's what Cadbury is playing off of. Furthermore, I think the whole culture of public apologies is ridiculous and pointless.

As an oft-described as a chocolate complexioned woman, I am not offended but that doesn't mean that she doesn't have a right to complain. *shrugs*

Wait. This is an opinion piece, presented as a news story. Who says the ad is racially charged, other than the author? Where's her argument? This is lazy, irresponsible writing. That's just my opinion, so can I put that in a headline, too? Note that it's not an ad for dark chocolate, nor is it saying 'our chocolate is tasty like Naomi,' and note that the words chocolate aren't in the text at all. note also that Campbell has a heck of a reputation as a troublesome, demanding, violent celebrity. Not the cleverest or most timely ad, but "racially charged?" How? unless you're quoting Campbell, that has no business being in a headline.

I have to say, I think they are reading to much into a silly chocolate advert, yes it's not the most eloquent, but I don't think it's meant to be offensive

I agree that people are seeing racial undertones that aren't there. Because chocolate is black, the chocolate companies can;t compare their chocolate bars to a woman who is known for luxury and excess? Luxury and excess are exactly what chocolate ads are always trying to convey!

I've heard about this a few times today and as a black woman, i see nothing racial about this ad. Its a chocolate ad for crying out loud. I agree with U2forlife about the diva tagline. I think people are just trying to make it racial because they have nothing better to do with their time. Every ad that you see doesn't have some sort of underlying racial message to it.

Maybe I'm just extremely naive, but I don't get why this was immediately judged to be racist. So, the product happens to be chocolate. The comparison between the product and Naomi Campbell was all about attitude and demanding attention, hence the diva tagline. It is seriously beyond time to drop the demands for apologies and time to stop with the assumptions that everyone is racist.
