Savory Sight: Korean Tacos From Namu

Korean tacos are the ultimate in East-meets-West, street-food fusion. Here HeyKristen shares her experience of Namu's version. I heard a ton about these tacos (most recently in a New York Times article) but I had yet to try them. I got a chance this weekend during San Francisco's Outside Lands music festival, and was not disappointed! The tacos come with a seaweed "shell" and are filled with beef, rice, onion, and a delicious spicy sauce. They ended up being the perfect festival food . . . I ate six of them over the course of the weekend!

anon- ... i am being serious. is it bad that i think this is not a taco at all? and that i think it sucks that they're relying on the popularity of "korean tacos" to sell this?

hmm yea the tomatoes aren't typical, nor the onions, but i totally assemble my kimbab like that at home... i mean, there are the ones that are rolled up (like what they sell at markets), but when i'm just eating seaweed and rice with other things at home, i just eat it like a "ssam", which is yea, the same as taco style. but it's korean! i just wish they could sell it off as being all-korean, which it mostly is, instead of relying on the hype of korean tacos (also, as a nerd, i had to look it up... wikipedia says a TACO is defined by its corn or wheat tortilla that is rolled or folded around a filling... haha yes! i'm a nerd... but i looked it up cuz i basically thought that was the case)

I guess it is assembled like a taco instead of rolled up like kimbap. Plus it is topped with tomatoes which is not typical.

why do they call it a "taco"? what makes it a taco? i'm korean, and to me, it looks just like something standard korean people would eat... i would call it a "kimbab"
