Are Pull-Apart Cakes Really Cupcakes?

I was walking through Target the other day when I noticed these holiday silicone cake molds. At first I didn't think much about them, after all, shaped cake molds are all the rage these days. However, on second glance, I noticed that they're actually called Pull-Apart Cupcake molds ($14.99). They've got a few different shapes out there — turtle, butterfly, alligator — and have recently come up with a few more additions for the holidays. The wreath and flower basket ideas are a lot of fun, but I think the penguin and snowman might be a little difficult to frost. Either way they'd be fun for a party or a potluck, but are they really cupcakes?

I'm sorry to say that I disagree with some of you, I have several of these molds and #1, I would consider them the new cupcake, it's not a cake if it's made of pieces, is it? And #2, I have made the turtle and wreath, plus another one (Hershey Kiss) and they only take one tub of frosting to put together. Each one is only one cake mix so it's the same as a regular cake. They are easier to serve because if serving for a child, you don't need a knife and fork, it's easy to pick up like a cupcake. If you ever have the time (they can be time consuming depending on the detail) I would definitely recommend these. And somebody make a comment you can only use them a couple of times, I'm not sure what that is about because I have used them over 10 times each and they are holding strong! Also, they now have a heart, bunny rabbit, train, dinosaur, car, flower basket, and they've always had a turtle! They really are fun! Sorry this is so long!

I don't think those really count as cupcakes even though they are very cute!

I'd say they're baby cakes, or mini cakes. Cupcakes definitely have to be in a cup to qualify!

These are the new thing, I think they are cute - but I wouldn't want to buy them and then only use is a couple of times.

I'd allow them to be cupcakes, but mamaseacat is right - the frosting has to be way overboard to keep the shape. I got a cupcake cake for my son's birthday and it was a mess!

I think they are considered mini-cakes or formed cupcakes. Although cute, I think they would be too hard to frost. We went to a children's party a couple of weeks ago and the mom got a butterfly cake made out of frosted cupcakes (from Safeway). It was easy to serve (no knife needed) and the overall shape was very cool, but the frosting was over the top! They needed that much frosting to keep all the cakes together.

I do not think it should be listed as cupcakes but I do love this idea for pull apart cakes.

Mini cakes I believe. Cupcakes are way more cuppy. But I still think it's a very cute idea.

i think that they could be cupcakes if you think that - but in general - if they aren't in a cupcake 'cup' then they really are just cakes in shapes. cute idea though!
