Puttanesca

Definition: Puttanesca

It's a spicy sauce served with pasta, generally made with black olives, garlic, tomatoes, onions, and anchovies all cooked in olive oil.

The name puttanesca is actually a derivation of the Italian word puttana, which means (are you ready for this?) "whore." Yep everyone, when you order your favorite spicy dish of Spaghetti all Puttanesca, you're actually ordering "Whore's spaghetti." The reason why it's called that is highly debated, however one version says it's a reference to the sauce's hot, spicy flavor and smell, another says it's from the fact that it was a quick cheap meal prostitutes could prepare between customers. Either way, it's a pretty interesting name. Who knew?!

This is one of my favourite meals- I used to eat it at least once a week :) Just for reference, 'puttanesca' means whorish.

I love puttanesca! Lots of foods in Mediterranean cultures have funny names. The soup I grew up eating from my Maltese mother translates into "Widow's soup" in English. Really makes you want to eat it, huh? lol

Adding the easy to prepare theory - you can make it all from canned or jarred foods. Not only easy to prepare, but easy to keep the ingredients around. I heard they made if for their customers too.

The version I heard a few years ago (on Batali's show) was that it was a meal the brothel houses prepared on certain nights to lure more customers in.
