Recap of Top Chef Las Vegas, Season Six, Episode Five

Top Chef Vegas: Episode 5

In what may be the world's first pairing of chuck wagons and ceviche, the Top Chef gang went camping this week. In 100-plus degree heat on a dusty dude ranch, the chefs prepared meals over fire pits for a group of hungry ranchers. It looked simultaneously horrible and highly entertaining.

Who do you think looked most home on the range? Let's talk about it when you

.

  1. Do you like the "high stakes" quickfires more when they win money or immunity?
  2. I feel like we're finally getting to know the contestants; did this episode give you a new perspective on any of the chefs?
  3. Is ceviche this season's scallops?
  4. Is Michael V. too cocky, or does he deserve to be?
  5. Which challenge seemed harder: cooking cactus or cooking at the camp?
  6. Would you want to eat fish on a dude ranch?
  7. Does Tom Colicchio seem to be getting tougher and less polite with each season or is it just me?
  8. How odd was it that Ron made mojitos even though he doesn't drink?
  9. Whose dish would you most want to eat? I'm curious to try Kevin's, since I'm fixated with watermelon and tequila right now.

Did I forget an important point of discussion? Bring it up in the comments.

1. Do you like the "high stakes" quickfires more when they win money or immunity? I like it better when they win immunity. It seems that people only try to win the quickfires to get money instead of showing how good they are and then feeling sad for themselves when they don't get money. 2. I feel like we're finally getting to know the contestants; did this episode give you a new perspective on any of the chefs? It really didn't. 3. Is ceviche this season's scallops? Definitely! 4. Is Michael V. too cocky, or does he deserve to be? I think Bryan deserves to be more cocky. 5. Which challenge seemed harder: cooking cactus or cooking at the camp? Cooking cactus. 6. Would you want to eat fish on a dude ranch? No. 7. Does Tom Colicchio seem to be getting tougher and less polite with each season or is it just me? It is just you. 8. How odd was it that Ron made mojitos even though he doesn't drink? Very odd and stupid. 9. Whose dish would you most want to eat? I'm curious to try Kevin's, since I'm fixated with watermelon and tequila right now. I'd try it. I didn't really pay attention to the dishes though.

how about 10. Do you think Matine actually talked about Basque country that ridiculously frequently, or was it clever editing?

I'm going to miss Mattin. He was hot. Last year Carla did a nonalcoholic drink that was a hit. That would have been MUCH smarter to do than try to do an alchoholic drink when you aren't even going to taste it. Dumb idea. Yep, getting tired of ceviches. Fish is not the first thing I think to eat on a hot day. Yuck.

I love all the cooking competitions just to learn about new foods and techniques. In response to TC - there is confident and there is cocky. And I'd eat fish just about anywhere and I do.

Put me down firmly in the "Michael is too cocky" camp. He's been more successful in the last couple episodes but was not doing so hot before that, and has been kind of douchey to his teammates at times. Plus I got the vibe that he was trying to take undue credit for the "deconstructed bernaise" in the episode before last, when his partner 100% gave him the idea.

2. It was interesting to see Jen a little rattled for the first time. And I was glad to see Ashley step up — I had a feeling she had potential. I love hearing about Ash's bizarre background, too. 3. It totally is! 6. I was surprised by how many of them chose fish! Granted, grilled fish can be delicious, but it still seemed odd to me. 9. I pretty much always want to eat Kevin's food. He just combines really interesting flavors.

1) I like it when they win money. I don't really like when they get immunity, no one should be safe from going home. 2) No not really. My impression of every one is the same 3) I was wondering the same thing. Whats with all the ceviche 4) He's not too cocky. He's talented and he deserves to be confident. He's my favorite right now. 5) Cooking with cactus. I don't know why anyone would want to do that. 6) Yeah sure. 7) I don't know if he's any different that usual. He usually speaks his mind. 9) Michael V.'s dish looked amazing.

1. i'm not sure - probably the money since i like to see ALL of the chefs actually work hard to not get eliminated rather than one coast or take too many risks since they know they won't go home. 2. i still think that the best ones are the bets ones...otherwise i'm just waiting through the weeks to see most of them go home 3. i think so - too many people are doing them! 4. he deserves to be - he's really good at what he does and puts out the most defined and complex dishes 5. the cactus i think. everyone should be able to cook over a fire and taste their food - but if you've never even approached cactus then that's a hard one. 6. nope - but i'm a veggie so i never want to eat it anyway 7. he doesn't hold back this year - that's for sure - but maybe it's just cause the chefs are putting out BAD stuff more often. the other judges really shared his sentiments 8. didn't carla do that last year with alcohol at the NO challenge? 9. i'm a fan of watermelon in dishes so either of the 2 that had it (mind you w/o the fish or meat etc)
