3 Savory Ways to Enjoy Watermelon

We're used to seeing watermelon's sweet applications, whether it's simply sliced into wedges or iced into a cake, but there's way more you can do with the fruit. The next time you cut one open, consider tossing it into one of these savory applications.

  1. Toss it in a salad: Whip up a simple, quick salad of bitter greens, fresh cheese (feta or mozzarella), and watermelon. The fruit also goes well with jicama, red onion, olives, tomatoes, goat cheese, radishes, mint, basil, cucumber, avocado, and fennel.
  2. Pair it with seafood: Top chilled seafood, like crab, atop a slab of watermelon.
  3. Grill it: You've paired cheese and watermelon together in a salad, so why not try it in a grilled form (a grilled watermelon slab with melted cheese on top, between two buns). If that presentation is too fussy, try this grilled watermelon salad dressed in a sesame-soy dressing.
