Simplehuman Rectangular Sensor Can: Love It Or Hate It?

So I was looking for new products to tell everyone about when I was bombarded by a huge number of posts talking about the new SimpleHuman "Hands-Free" garbage can. At first I ignored it, thinking, how is this new? I mean, I have a hands free garbage can at home, you know the kind with a pedal that you step on? But after surfing the web a bit more I found that every kitchen gadget site seemed to be talking about it. So finally I said, okay what's the big deal!?

Well, it turns out that instead of a handy (or would that be footy?) push pedal, there are now sensors. So instead of stepping down, all you have to do is bring your foot near it. I dunno, $200 for a garbage can sounds a bit ridiculous to me. However, if you've got the money (and six D batteries) to spare, then you might want to check out the SimpleHuman rectangular sensor can.

A friend of mine has a variation on this can, except the sensors are above the can, so you wave your hands above it and then it opens for you. It's great because it keeps her dog out of the trash. I doubt she paid $200 for it...i can't imagine her doing such a thing!

Not worth it! And my dog figured out how to open the lid on my pedal trash can too, for his own personal trash buffet. Dam dog.

A coffee shop near my house has one. I don't know why a new coffee shop would shell out that kind of money. It's pretty cool, but it was really confusing the first time I encountered it. Completely not worth it though.

I would rather take that $200 and buy me feet a new pair of shoes and keep stepping on my old fashioned pedal trash can. Call me old fashioned - but that is how I feel.

Is it really so hard to step on the "peddle" on the hands-free garbage cans out now?

Great if you don't have a dog. Otherwise he'll not only be setting off the sensor but he'll think it's his own private buffet.
