yummy! i spent all of yesterday making this cake for my friend's birthday at work today- we just enjoyed it and it was *incredible*!!! well worth all the effort. the only problem was the bailey's pudding: i didn't have a thermometer, and even though i beat the pudding for 8 minutes in the boiler, i don't think it got hot enough. even after 5+ hours of refrigeration, it just never got thick. oh well, still tasted great as a gloppy filling! thanks for the recipe...

That looks yummy  I've made a few lopsided cakes too because I have a really hard time waiting for the cake to cool completely before icing. Will have to employ your dad's skewer technique next time ;)

It still looks delicious, regardless of any problems you may have had.

I had a similar "slippage" problem with my Boston Cream Disaster. If I was to do it again, I would let the cake cool longer with the pudding layers "cementing" together before I tried to frost. Nice trick with the skewers though! I'll have to remember that one.

I made a cake similar to this for Super Bowl Sunday - a devil's food cake with chocolate ganache I got from Martha's website. I had the same slippage problem!!! I just didn't have enough time to let the cakes cool as much as I should have. Anyway, could you possibly post your favorite chocolate cake recipe? My best friend is coming home from England in 2 weeks and desperately wants chocolate cupcakes. Thanks!

I love that you celebrated your half birthday too. It's going to be a new tradition in my life - or at least something I will one day pass on to my kids. About the puddin' cake...one time in college a friend from home came to visit and spent the day making my roommates and I this amazingly beautiful dinner. When she got to dessert she realized we didn't have any butter left so she used pudding instead. The cake ended up looking like a pile of dirt (it was chocolate on chocolate and she put fresh raspberries on it) but it tasted like heaven.
