Study Finds Girls Have Superior Taste to Boys

For those of you who never understood how your college boyfriend could eat delivery pizza every night, we may have found your answer.

A study of 8,900 Danish schoolchildren at the University of Copenhagen has found that girls are better at recognizing tastes than boys, particularly when it comes to sweet and sour. Since males and females have the same number of tastebuds, the difference lies in how they process taste impressions.

According to the study, boys need, on average, 10 percent more sourness and 20 percent more sweetness than girls to recognize the taste. In addition, because boys seemed less sensitive to recognizing tastes, it only makes sense that boys tended to prefer more extreme flavors than girls.

The study attempted to quantify the tasting ability of children, and its results had a clear message: Children are better tasters than the industry presumes them to be. "One could easily develop more varied food products and snacks for children and young people," said Bodil Allesen-Holm, the scientific head of the study. Could fish sticks and chicken nuggets make way for something more gourmet in the future?

Hmm, is that why I always want to go to fancy restaurants while my man is always satisfied with Chili's? :P

I can eat really hot and spicy food, I guess that means my taste is less sensitive. Too bad, I wish I could be a snooty food critic. Haha I'm just kidding.

I'm going to go ahead and give chiefdishwasher the benefit of the doubt and think, at least for a moment, that the comment was intended with humor and levity. I mean, wow is right, myladybloom. And let's face it, we've all known that girls have better taste than boys. The vast majority of women choose to date men, and that spectacularly superior choice can only be a product of their having better taste than us men. I mean, I've maintained for years that my girlfriend has fantastic taste, especially in men.

i'm not surprised by this at all - i find that a lot of guys that i know (all my brothers included) just don't have discerning palates , and that's not a bad thing, it's just the way that it is.

Wow, chiefdishwasher. Just wow. Stereotyping much?

Of course girls can tell sweet from sour. That's how they are brought up and turn into women. When they want something they are sweet and when they don't they are sour.

Well, my husband sure fits the mold. He has NO taste buds whatsoever. Or at least, it takes a lot to stimulate them. He'll eat just about anything, but I don't know if he actually tastes a lot unless it's VERY spicy or has a lot of onions and garlic in it. I've seen him go in the fridge and grab handfuls of raw onions and eat them plain. Or if he's in the mood for pizza, he puts lots of onions on it and douses it in those hot pepper flakes.
