Sunday BBQ: Savory Tofu-on-a-Stick

When I'm in the mood for a light meal, I look for flavorful vegetarian options. These grilled tofu sticks — a play on the traditional corn dog — are the perfect alternative.

To give them a spicy kick, the tofu sticks are marinated overnight in a sweet-hot mustard. They're grilled, rather than deep-fried, like most corn dogs, so they're actually good for you.

If you are not a fan of tofu, you could substitute something else. Try marinating tempeh or portobello mushrooms. To get the recipe,

There have been studies but I don't think there is more concern over the fake soy meat stuff because it's all processed. Soy protein in moderation is OK. I eat a fair amount of soy even though with my family medical history I'm almost guaranteed to have breast cancer. I'm pretty comfortable eating stuff like tofu, tempeh, edamame, but I really try to limit the processed stuff. Asian countries where soy is eaten as a regular part of their diet have a lower rate of breast cancer. Of course, they are eating it in a more natural state. Gorging yourself on a package of veggie soy sausage everyday for years = bad idea. Replacing a corn dog with a tofu-on-a-stick = good idea.
