Taste Test: Pizza Hut's Tuscani Lasagna

Taste Test: Pizza Hut's Tuscani Lasagna

At the Food Fete that Party and I attended a few weeks ago, we ran into some representatives from Pizza Hut, who revealed that the fast food chain would be introducing yet another pasta to its delivery lineup: lasagna. After the intriguing taste test results of our Pizza Hut pastas, I was looking forward to giving the lasagna ($14.99) a try. It's impossible to go too wrong with any dish made of pasta, tomato sauce, and melted cheese. To check out more pictures and find out what I thought,

.

Pizza Hut's Tuscani lasagna is made with three cheeses — ricotta, Parmesan, and Romano — as well as a meat sauce, so it's not an option for vegetarians. Upon first glance, it looked like a dead ringer for the meat marinara pasta I'd tried last month — that is to say, not so appealing. The tray was also a behemoth. The lasagna claims to feed a family of four, but I'd say that, considering it weighs in at over three pounds, it could easily feed a couple more mouths.

With a firm, chewy bite and a nice ratio of meat, cheese, pasta, and sauce, the lasagna was actually enjoyable. Both of us went back for seconds. We were, however, shocked by how sweet the dish was: the marinara was decidedly sweet, and the rest of the recipe compensated for this by being incredibly salty.

My advice to the Pizza Hut kitchen would be to cut back on both the sugar and the salt. If you're a big lasagna fan, don't want to bother with reheating and cooking, and can handle a bit of overseasoning, I'd say this could be the match for you.

Have you tried this dish yet? What did you think of it?

Plenty good enough for me, considering it's 550 calories and costs about seven dollars American.

I TRIED THE TUSCANI LASAGNA,WAS PERFECT FOR ME. I DON'T LIKE A BLAND SAUCE BUT MINE WAS NOT SALTY AND DIDN'T LOOK LIKE YOUR ILLUSTRATION. MAYBE IT DEPENDS ON THE STORE THAT PREPARES IT. MOST LIKE HOMEMADE TO ME......THUMBS UP.

We tried their alfredo pasta, which was actually really good. I'm glad we didn't get the lasagna, because I don't like sweet pasta sauce, which is why I don't like pizza huts pizza!

Given that the sweetness of the sauce come from High Fructose Corn Syrup I won't be trying this anytime soon. Looks reasonably good but...

I HATE sweet pasta sauce, so I would never buy this. Plus, I'm sure it is loaded with fat and sodium and calories...I'd much prefer to make my own pasta, or at least get me "eating out" calories from something better.

I wish they'd make it without the meat...I'd try it then.

Eek...I hate Pizza Hut. I'd never want to try this!

Id rather make my own lasagna but thanks for letting me know it's over seasoned. I can't stand when there is an obvious salty taste to something.

My sister got this with her fiancee and his two kids. They said it wasn't bad. He is Italian in heritage (his parents moved to the U.S. from Italy in the 50's) so he obviously recognized that it was "American Italian" food. But, they all said that for that genre, it was decent.

Well what I realized is that if you feed six people with it, and it costs $14.99, then it's quite the deal...

I want to try it! I don't mind the sweetness or salt in this type of dish. I did try the mac and bacon dish and it was BLAND! My boyfriend thought it was ok... I on the other hand can make a great dish of mac n cheese from a box! So I was not pleased. This dish, I do want to try! I would normally spend 15 bucks for the pizza mias... but a pasta dish is always a favorite in my house.

If you look at the nutrion facts, neither calories nor fat content are as bad as the salt content: 1670 mg! Considering that for a whole day we should have no more than 2300, actually 2000 is better, then one would be better off with a slice of pizza probably.

My husband and I tried this out last week and while he seemed to enjoy it I had a small sliver and decided I would never purchase it again! Like you said the sauce was just super sweet plus there was barely any meat, overall I guess you get what you paid for.

too sweet and too salty is a killer for me.

In all honesty it doesn't look too bad and the bacon mac and cheese sounds pretty good. I wouldn't mind trying it. And to everyone writing about these being calorie nightmares, it may not be that much worse (calorie/fat wise) than getting the same things elsewhere. If you make it yourself, thats one thing, but don't demonize the products. No one is telling you to eat the whole thing yourself (and as Party and Yum pointed out, it's filling to you probably won't be eating it all yourself). Moderation is key, if you want some, have some (just not all). My $0.02

I find the entire idea of ordering pasta from Pizza Hut to be disturbing, so I definitely haven't tried this. In the time it would take for Pizza Hut to deliver this lasagna to you, you could probably put one together yourself. Semi-homemade way: A box of no-boil noodles, a jar of spaghetti sauce, a tub of ricotta, and some mozzarella & parmesan. Add some sauteed spinach or browned meat to the sauce and you've got a tasty, easy lasagna.

I'll make my own. I don't need a comparison to know mine is much better!

Pass, I'd rather make my own. You can make your own lasagna for about that much money and make it way healthier using cottage cheese and skim ricotta. Plus the idea of a sweet sauce makes me gag a little.

Too sweet and too salty? Sounds like two dealbreakers.

I'll pass, thank you anyway. It cracks me up how in the commercial they have 'real' Italians, presumably in Italy, testifying how good it is. Yeah, sure it is. Just like your Nonna's.
