Tater Mitts: Love It Or Hate It?

I hate the word tater. For some reason I can not explain, the word tater absolutely repulses me. Pair it with the word tot and I get extremely grossed out with nightmares of elementary school cafeteria lunches plaguing me in my sleep. Pair it with the word mitt and I will immediately vomit. While I appreciate the idea and concept behind gloves that are especially designed to easily scrub, clean, and peel potatoes, there is no way I could ever buy, use, or wear them simply because I am disgusted by the vulgar name. Perhaps if they were called Potato Scrubbers or Potato Cleaning Gloves I might be more inclined to love this product. I'm curious to see what you think so, tater mitts: love it or hate it?

I bought these thinking they would be cool. RIP OFF!!! They are rubber "playtex-like" gloves with gravel, much like you'd find in a fish tank collecting fish poop. The skin is easy to remove from a potato with these, but what they don't mention in the advertising or on the box until you open the sealed gloves and read the instructions, you must boil the potato for 4-5 minutes prior to using them. You can't pick up the potato out of the water with the gloves, as they aren't insulated, that's in the directions...I'm assuming some rocket scientist has tried...The included cutting tool also requires boiling the potato until it's completely soft, don't know about anyone else but I just can't bring myself to completely boil a potato only to pop it into a vat of grease to create fries, sort of makes no sense. Another issue is clean up, you have to use a scrub brush. Watch out for the blue pieces of gravel in your potatoes also, first time I used it I had blue specks in my mashed potatoes and ended up throwing them away because I realized it was gravel from the gloves. Wanna peel your potatoes in less than a minute? Don't waste your money, try a peeler.

What made me hate this product is the bad choice of a name. I agree that the word tater is just repulsive. It's a neat idea for sure, but the name just ruined it for me.

I guess I can see the usage but I don't know how often I would actually use them to clean potatoes....interesting

First they feel weird.. I use to work in a home decor area of a mass store... nice as Alton Brown says no uni-idems they need to be multitaskers

I think they look like a novel idea. Especially for those of us who grow our own potatoes. When you get taters (just for you yum) out of the garden, their skins aren't as tough, but they won't rub off with just your hands. These little mitts look like they'd do the job perfectly!

I have the same reaction to the word "mater" for tomato. I travel for work, and have heard people order "maters" in public, and it upsets me every time. For some reason "tater" doesn't have the same effect, though.

Partysugar, I've never heard of anyone having such a drastic reaction to the word tater before! You really feel strongly about this issue!!LOL :) I think they look gross all nubby like that, but I could hide them under the cupboard if they actually worked well.

It seems a little drastic to call the name vulgar... But, yeah, the gloves themselves look kinda icky. Lux

Does it work? If it does, then heck yeah, but if it still leaves little bits of nasty peel, then no way. Someone try them out and let us know!

Seriously, you don't like tater tots?! I'm 29 next week and I still eat the tasty lil things! As for the tater mitt, IF it works like it says, sign me up, I am no good at peeling potatoes!
