Top Tastes From the Winter Fancy Foods Show

Jan 21 2010 - 10:30am

The Winter Fancy Foods Show [1], an annual expo of foods and trends that takes place each January at San Francisco's Moscone Center [2], happened over the weekend. On Tuesday, YumSugar and I ate our way through the aisles of cheese, chocolate, and every edible item imaginable. Here are my top bites.

Magnolia Coconut Ice Cream

Don't let the color throw you off; the flavor of this incredibly smooth creamy ice cream is pure coconut. All of Magnolia's ice creams [3] are made with premium tropical fruit purees from the Philippines, but the coconut was by far my favorite.

Xochitl Chipotle Queso Dip

Both Yum and I have a thing for queso dip, so we made it a point to try all of the varieties at the show. The majority were generic and flavorless, but Xochitl's chipotle queso dip [4] was smoky, cheesy, and just plain addictive.

Divina Roasted Tomatoes

These roasted tomatoes [5] were excellent. They tasted like a cross between sundried tomatoes in oil and canned tomatoes but had a bright freshness and, thanks to the dried spices and garlic, tons of flavor!

French Cocktail Blinis

These premade, bite-size blinis don't have a distributor in the US yet. When they find one, I'll be the first person to buy them. They taste homemade and are ideal for entertaining.

Sartori Black Pepper Parmesan

Sartori had a selection of seasoned parmesan cheeses, and I preferred the black pepper parmesan [6]. It was spicy, nutty, and perfect.

Porcino Pate

Normally I shy away from overly processed vegetarian pates, but this rich Italian mushroom-truffle paste [7] was divine.

Pig'Nics Sausage Bites

Olive-sized chunks of seasoned cured meat may not be glamorous, but they sure are delicious. Pig'Nics [8] are a fun and welcome addition to any picnic spread.

Pane Vino Cheddar Grissini

Breadsticks hold a special place in my heart, and once these thick, crunchy, slightly cheddary grissini [9] hit the market, they're sure to be a staple in my party-ready pantry [10].

Da Morgada Portuguese Sardines

Canned sardines never tasted as good as these flaky, melt-in-your mouth chunky fillets by Portuguese brand Da Morgada [11].

La Salamandra Dulce de Leche

Dipping a spoon into this milky, creamy dulce de leche [12] was like taking a trip to the streets of Buenos Aires. I'm dying to get my hands on a jar.
