UN: World Wastes a Third of All Food Produced

UN: The World Wastes a Third of All Food Produced

Yesterday, the United Nations revealed a shocking statistic: that 1.3 billion tons of food is wasted every year — roughly a third of all the planet's food that's produced for human consumption. The findings come from a report commissioned by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization, and are designed to address the causes behind rising prices, declining food production, and world hunger, among other issues.

Wasted food, or excess or unwanted food being tossed away, amounts to 222 million tons of refuse a year. It doesn't just apply to home cooks and finicky diners; according to the report, retailers in developed countries are as much to blame for throwing out food simply for its appearance. Then there's the issue of food loss: deficits that occur as a result of inefficient food production and processing, particularly in developing nations. Are you shocked by these numbers?

I'ts true. Sometimes I think you just need to set the trend, so nobody dining with you feels silly doing so, and then everyone else feels OK to follow!

GummiBears, I cracked up with your post! Susannah, I agree that I feel weird sometimes too taking home a small amount of food in front of people. I went out to lunch with a bunch of co-workers and did it and then the next time so did 3 other people!

Not at all. Half of you guys would drop kick me into oblivion if you saw how much food gets thrown out by me. I'm ashamed by it but I am trying to curb it.

I often feel a little weird taking home leftovers if they are small or if nobody else is doing the same at my table, but I always try to because I hate the thought of wasted food.

This is so sad! I always ate my leftovers and tried not to waste but now my husband has really made it a point for us not to waste food. I take home even the smallest of leftovers and try to use up everything we cook at home. This is such a staggering number! I wish that we composted too, it would at least cut back on our waste.
