Unique Thanksgiving Recipe Suggestions?

Readers, Thanksgiving is just one day away, and our community assistant needs your help! She's looking for a fast, scrumptious, and impressive dish. She writes:

"This Thanksgiving I am attending dinner at boyfriend's parents' house, and I want to a bring a dish that will really wow them. I need a recipe that is quick yet delicious. I am unsure what to make, and since I know they will have plenty of the traditional dishes, I want to bring something that is unique. Do you have any suggestions?"

She doesn't specify the course, so let's provide her with appetizer, entrée, side, dessert, and drink options. My advice? She should bring all the ingredients to a specialty cocktail! It's unexpected, and the process of mixing the drinks is a great way to break the ice. A nice cocktail shaker, muddler, and bottle of alcohol can double as a hostess gift.

RanchersGirl, Would you believe that it's never been tried with black olives at my home before? It's always been one of those old family holiday recipes that has been carved in stone. It would be worth a try, though! Maybe with some mixed olives from an olive bar? No bacon, though. Save that for the leftover sandwiches! Did I just say that???

@fuzzles: Your family recipe sounds terrifc! May I substitute black olives and add crumbled bacon? :) @zeze: Your recipe sounds pretty delicious too! Mushrooms, sauteed onions, Parmesean cheese...what's not to like? :)

My family always noshes on olive dip before the meal. It's stupid easy and delicious. Just soften up some cream cheese and toss in hearty amounts of chopped jarred green olives and minced yellow onion. Thin a bit with a little juice from the olive jar. Chill a few hours before serving with carrot and celery sticks for dipping.

These work for various holiday parties, they're good warm, cold, with a variety of cheese. I usually make them with filo. http://patentandthepantry.wordpress.com/2008/10/13/butternut-squash-and-caramelized-onion-pastries/

I tried this mozzarella appetizer last weekend and posted the recipe to my OnSugar blog. It was ridiculously easy to make (took 5 minutes to put together), incredibly delicious and almost too beautiful to eat: http://www.lamenageredebutante.com/Entre-Festive-Mozzarella-di-Bufala-avec-Pomme-Grenade-Piment-Fort-Menthe-et-Persil-12200021 My blog is in French but there is a Google Translate widget at the top of the page.

I've got the most delicious appetizer, saw it on Pioneer Woman - French Onion stuffed mushrooms. Cook thinly sliced onions in butter until golden, add your favorite herb (sage, bay leaf, whatever you like) when its done - Toss some mushroom caps in olive oil on high to give them some color, then fill them with the onions and top with your fav melty cheese (gruyere, swiss) and cook in the oven until cheese is melted and the mushrooms are cooked. I topped mine with a Parmesan/breadcrumb mix on top. Sooo good!

If you're looking for a side dish, I made Baked Butternut Squash and Cranberries for Canadian Thanksgiving last month. The recipe is really easy to make. If you're interested, you can find it here: http://eatspinrunrepeat.wordpress.com/2010/03/03/baked-butternut-squash-and-cranberries/

It even comes with a video - so you can be the judge! - Michelle.
