White Zinfandel

Definition: White Zinfandel

White Zinfandel
A type of rosé or blush wine made from red Zinfandel grapes. It takes its rosy pink color from the grape skins that are quickly removed from the juice after the grapes are pressed. By removing the skins, the transfer of dark pigments is prohibited. The wine is then made using the same process as white wine. The flavor is slightly sweet and pairs nicely with cream based pastas, fish, and other light dishes.

I used to drink white zin. as my 'wine of choice' but anymore, after one bad incident of 'white zin. overload' from a box-o-wine night (see comment on yesterday's post on the matter...) I can't stand it. It seems to be a bit "trashy" to me too although I am no wine snob, it just doesn't seem to hold ground like a classic Merlot or chardonnay.

I used to work at a winery doing special events and I admit I am a bit of a wine snob. I grew up in Napa Valley, what can I say? We used to call the obnoxious tourists who obviously knew nothing about wine "white zinners". Sort of mean I guess. I agree with KittyKatgrr, rose is the way to go for a really "user friendly" wine. A perfect picnic or sunny day wine. Rose is also really hot right now so if you order it you will look like you are in "the know".

p.s, most places have a rose wine that is not a white zin, therefor its a tad bit more tanic and more of an actual "wine" if you dont want to go for the white, as for the rose! :)

I love wine, and have taken many wine classes, i completely disagree with this post!! After being a server, taking classes and now that i am a chef, my opinion is that white zin does not complement a thing!! If you want a sweet wine to go with those dishes, try a white riesling. Its light, sweet and not too sweet and overpowering like the white zin is, so therefor the white riesling complemnts much much better!! I've learned and witnessed that most people order the white zin, because its the only sweet wine they know of, after working in many fine dining resturants for years, I always urge you ladies to try something else than white zin! Your zin that isint white is a very heavy wine, so go for the white!! I only drink white zin, when i am comming home from the bars and am way to drunk to buy a better wine at the gas station :) :) sorry for all the misspellings, my wisdom teeth are comming in, i'm on medicine and feel awful. Go for the white!!

It's sort of a starter wine, something you drink when you're still drinking amaretto & midori sours. I can't imagine it drinking it now that I have a taste for dry wines (and dark beer and gin).
