Whose Review Is More Important? A Critic's or Yelp's?

Whose Review Is More Important? A Critic's or Yelp's?

Chef Tyler Florence recently proposed a question to his Twitter followers that I can't stop thinking about. He asked: what's more important to you, a local restaurant critic's review or Yelp? While I've never been much of a Yelper, I've always read the San Francisco Chronicle's restaurant reviews. However, I prefer to make my own judgment about an eatery. I guess neither the critic or the Yelper has much an influence over me. How about you?

What bothers me about Yelp is that people can be completely arbitrary when assigning a number of stars to a particular restaurant. I've seen reviews like "This place was great!" and they gave it 3 stars. If it's so great, why not give 5 stars?

I rely on the trifecta, all pretty much equally--food critics, Yelp, and the opinions of friends. With a little sifting, you can find what you are looking for.

Yelp can at least give me a general idea of what to expect.

I like Yelp a lot. The reviews are usually honest and to-the-point. I trust a Yelper's review more than a critic's honestly.
