Would You Drink Yak Butter Tea?

When I was in Tibet last year, one of the things we tried was yak butter tea. Popular in Tibet and southwestern China, this drink is made from tea, yak butter, and salt. It's very warming, and according to tradition, your cup (or bowl) is constantly refilled and never empty.

Unfortunately, I found it to be quite strong and incredibly salty, with barely any hint of tea. I was trying to figure out how not to get more added to my glass. It was more like salty butter soup, and I — the girl who can eat just about anything — had to force myself to drink it. I should mention that my guidebook actually said it was one of the most revolting things they'd ever had.

I could see where it might be amazingly tasty if you were in a cold wind on a Himalayan mountain top because the fat coating would be quite soothing. However, at a regular cafe, it wasn't quite so nice.

So tell me, would you try yak butter tea, or would you steer away?

Well at the moment any type of butter or milk made me sick, but I'd still be up for trying that!

Sounds absolutely disgusting. I don't think I'd ever be able to get it past my lips. I have a feeling Paula Deen might like it though...she's all about butter in all forms.

i'll have to pass on that one - it's salty tea and that's just not yummy sounding and i usually don't like to have milk/butter in my tea either.

If I was a guest in someone's home I would drink it, but I don't think I would order it at a restaurant.

It sounded pretty good to me until I read your description of what it was like... blech. I'd try it, of course, but I am not a huge fan of getting my mouth coated in fat... I don't think I'd be able to shake the feeling that I was drinking liquified fat. Shudder.

I had plenty of yak butter tea, yak meat, and yak butter during a trip to Tibet. Yak meat is quite nice -- gamey like lamb, but very "stringy". But I never developed a liking for yak butter or yak butter tea. To me it smells & tastes extremely gamey and oily.

Actually a thing like that would do wonders for sore throat! It is heavy and odd taste, but something like that (really warm milk + lard) is used around the world as home-made aid for heavy laryngitis.

I am normally up for anything, but I can only tolerate intense butter flavor in small doses, and this does not sound like a small dose. :)

You must have had a bad kind! There was a Tibetan restaurant near my college on the East Coast, and my friends and I would brave the long walk in the snow for a hot cup of butter tea. Theirs was excellent, and you could actually TASTE the black tea. Sucks that you had a bad cup! That does sound awful.
