It sounds so odd to me. I always ate white bread with butter. I use to love warming it up by toasting it and the butter would melt, OMG SO GOOD. But if it's a good, whole-grain, homemade bread that is hot out of the oven, nothing beats a little bit of butter and a sprinkle of sea salt. For example, I would never (or very rarely) use butter on sourdough, and I wouldn't use olive oil on regular sandwich bread from the grocery store.
